    help with a few questions

    hi all.
    first let me say i know nothing about cable if it was satellite i would
    have no problems, now here's the questions
    i have been offered free a cable box it's a [samsung smt-2100c]
    is this a official cable company box and should'nt be given away?
    the friend who offered it to me is moving and does'nt need it now.
    next it has a card with it, can a card be programmed for this box.
    i am told it was working first class a short time ago. a guy at the
    local pc fair sorted the card out for him and he cant offer no help
    if this can be programmed what do i need to give it a test

      A samsung box belongs to the cable company. I'm not sure if it becomes the customers property after 1 year.

      We do not allow any discussion about hacking cable company equipment, sorry!

          thanks for the info mate, i always check first on anything i dont know about.
          i had a thought the box could be a cable owned box.

                  Cable boxes remain the property of the CC's at all times , hence they are removed from ebay auctions as they are classed as stolen property , CC's charge for installation of some boxes , this isn't a purchase of the box.

                  If you owned the equipment this would lead to disputes as to who is responsible for any repairs/replacements that are necessary if the box fails.

                  If you are caught with a modified box you could be charged with theft/handling stolen property and also criminal damage for any modifications you make to the equipment plus theft of cable tv service
