      Hi mornachew,
Well depends what box you are looking at, forget the NAG 1 boxes now,Eurovox,Starview, etc etc, I would suggest a open sourced Linux receiver whether a original or a clone. been covered here uk suppliers >

If it's a clone dreambox you want then stay well clear of DVBMonkey, I have had nothing but problems from these guys lately, don't get me wrong the boxes are first class but customer service or lack of it lets them down.
Looking over 20 odd days to receive a box from these guys, which is in this day and age absolutely terrible.
I am sure you will get a lot of input from the other guys n girls on here who have been looking for a suitable supplier.

Nag 1 is coming to the end of it's lifespan, this will be upgraded in the not to distant future to Nag 2, Nag 3 ? and because these boxes are static closed source Nag 1 boxes they cannot handle nag 2,nag 3 encryption.
The blackbox from BuyingThings.co.uk if in stock is a excellent choice, however if not in stock then these have to come from our friends at DVBMonkey.com, I would clarify whether they have UK stock before ordering.
And you will be able to get everything you need in respect of images and and rom updates, and we can point you in the right direction as to where to find the keys.

BuyingThings.co.uk Have only 2 Blackbox units left as of 13:12 23rd Dec + 10 Additional units available on the 27th Dec.

Unfortunately it's a done deal, I was advised by one of our senior engineers in the local head end a couple of week ago that the process will be rolled out in 2009.
But we have had a really good run for our money, but i think if anyone is looking at buying a cable box now they need to look at a open sourced linux receiver over say a closed source nag 1 receiver.

Problem is,when there was only 2000 people connecting non subbed equipment to the VM network via say a dbox...that could be tolerated somewhat, but this has now gone mainstream with all the nag 1 equipment out there and so many people owning other cable equipment, Sky have told VM to clean up it's act to reduce fraud.

in total agreement dreambox is the way to go its more than just a reciever, but thats another story for another day.......................

have to agree with both your comments,
especially shadys - epg on starview is crap!

i just sold my starview 2 'the box',
i sold my sv2 with the future in mind,
i made my money back by selling it,
just thought if vermin changes to nag2 or 3,
                            it wont be worth nothing,
so i decided to go for something which would be future proof
and opted for an open source linux box!

i was looking at a blackbox from buythings for about roughly ?80 including p&p,
but decided to go for the openmedia which was ?100 including delivery,
i mean for an extra ?20 i have the satellite option!
even though i dont use satellite now,
i do plan to in the future!

don't know if you've heard of the openmedia box,its a cable and satellite box in 1,
                            its like a dreambox 500c and a dreambox 500s,
                            in a nutshell its 2 in 1!

it has 2 scart sockets unlike the dm500c which has the 1,
the openmedia also has a card slot!

search 'max_gee' on the forum he sells them,
but they only come with FTA image on it!
                            i brought one from him,
he's a trustworthy, honest and a sound guy,
will help you with advice as well

you'll also find a section on the forum for openmedia discussions
