Any move into nag 3 will kill vm as people will move over to S** and vm will loose basic subs. Don't worry about anything major soon, big news is on the way with project canvas from the major broadcasters it will give them all a run for the money! and its free. VM are currently migrating all cable providers onto its network, except upc.
It would cost far more to setup a IP based system on servers to cover most of the country than a change of encryption to N3 for example, the hardware needed to to broadcast over the internet using Newport Networks or Marconi (british based leaders in this technology) is very expencive along with a receiver chang need for every customer to use this technology would certainly bankrupt Virmin.....

It was annouced at the shareholders meeting that the IPTV will be inplace by the end of the year, the infrastucture is already in place with VM broadband 50 meg. Vm have been messing with the signal since the start of the year on all transponders, they are changing servers for the fun of it at the mo as they expect the on demand to take off big style. All info on this is available on techwatch & cableforum a Vm customer site that hate us.

Also,, small note on the people who think cardsharing is the defo best solution,

how do you intend to get the box id and RSA of the card to be shared?,,,, if they replace receiver from n1/n2 then its a new boxkey,, which at present is immposible in portugal because they now encrypt the firmware on there new D+ hd receiver,,,, that was only known way to get details enabling someone to actually use the card, before they can even think about sharing
you'd need to hope there is no more hardware changing and hardware stays same from n1>n3, but i doubht very very much

and as batman said,,, UK far more likely to see IPTV than any new nagra update, there most recent boxs support this .
        boom!

I stand corrected so batman44 I realy though they would not have the funds for rolling out IPTV even though its the way forward, its even worse so for customers than getting N3 as some of the IPTV companys use a ip generating software for each seassion, so you will never have the same connection twice to stop piracy in effect....

          Thanks for the info batman44

So I think it will be bad news for us all, lets hope they cancel it all due to funding. I am sure so clever clogs will find a way round it. I just bought a technomate sat & terrestrial 6900HD box it has an ethernet port and a cable input as well as terrestrial and sat inputs, this is also upgradeable via software. Good thinking me thinks, clever those technomate chaps thinking ahead. I just thought that if they do go IPTV then it means they will only send me the channel info i pay for to my box! nothing else will be in the stream. Also they will target advertising specifically directed at me! They only way would be to fool the server that i am an engineer that requires all the channel info, a special address or something. I see trouble for us all ahead.

Well if there is any consulation there is a workaround fo BTvision at the moment which uses simular technology I believe, I have some details on it but I ill give it time untill I run out to buy the receiver thats needed to pull it off.

As I said before thee is always a way around cable tv because its a closed network, sometimes a small modification to hardware on the receive can open all channels but of course a basic subsciption is allways the best way forward

this is only coming in to play with the hd boxs as they need to make more space for more hd and the old boxs are not that good they will replace them before they do anything so if you have a hd box i would then say worry but more stuff to play with at the end of the day

                          The Samsung 3110 is a DVB-C box.
The other recent boxes don't appear to support IPTV either.

The extra bandwidth will come from switching off the analogue network.

I can tell you now that my technomate 6900HD Combo Super + has 3 inputs on the back 1 sat, 1 terrestrial & 1 cable, it says so on the socket! I hooked it all up at the weekend and I thought how interesting, never mind the specs, if anybody else has one look on the back!

                              Interesting read guys !

All of which seems to me in these ecomic times to be far to expencive to roll out (replace all customer receivers set up New distrabution Servers across the country maybe having to lay new fiber-optics in some areas etc) I know this is the way forward in cable television, risk analysis would suggest to use N3 on there current service wait untill the ecomic climate changes some what and then roll out the new service...

People who are struggling at the moment are middle income homes, these people will drop unnessary bill such as Sky and Cable, when asked most people would keep the Internet connection and get rid or downgrade there TV subscriptions....

As with every company just like Virmin all setup costs will be reflected in the price of the subscription when rolled out it will always cost more than it does now, I still think Virmin will use N3 untill its hacked or untill people have money back in there pockets for IPTV .. IPTV is great for providers to introduce newer versions of pay tv (pay as you watch) most people dont have the money for this crap at the moment...

And finaly it will be a lot harder to hack than a N3 encryption system so it doesnt realy matter... Even though BTvision is some what opened using a few different receivers.

                              Regards:

What ever they do will be fun but what i will say is they dont even need to go to n3 as there is parts of n2 still not open so they could just run with that might save them money in the long run we will just have to wait and see what they do
