    Virgin chipped box filter?

My friend has just moved and asked virgin to move her account over to the new house. They came and installed the line making a splitter for her modem and the other cable line goes to a large white box 5" or so long as wide as the skirting board and about 2" deep with no visible screws, the cable then comes from that white box to her stb.

She has a basic package and when putting her chipped box on she only gets the same package as what she pays for. If she removes the line to the white box and runs her chipped stb from the splitter she gets all channels.

As far as I can see this box is actively blocking the chipped stb and the weird thing is that it only allows the package she's paying for on either box. It seems stupid if this is some kind of passive filter as it took her 2 minutes to work out how to get round it!!

Anyone know anything about these large white boxes on the skirting? (they're much bigger than the white cable/radio outlets that vm use)

    Regards.

It sounds like an attenuator to clean up the signal (it does drop it slightly though). I'm not sure why its affecting the box.
