i understand you have to purchase the box etc, but want to know if i can do it with my own vm sub or can i only do it by using the kryptview box etc? trying to not have to fork out for the full vm package and seeing if i can do it this way

No box will open more channels than the card is programmed for. Only way to get more for less is krypt or star view. I strongly advise you to keep clear of both though unless you have a fetish for "channels gone" threads. If you MUST have cable, get a kv. Its still crap but at least you only pay for the initial box.
