A lot of detection been done by Cable provides like Virgin is from fourms like this one and many others , they can detect your IP address you use to posts etc, from this information they can see what internet provider you are using and trace your accout back to see if you are using there network (as many providers suppy Internet telephone & Television) its easy enough to deduce.

There are many fourm members on many such websits up to no good, Spying on any progress been made and gathering information if needed on us all.

As they still can not prove any wrong doing (They can guess of course) and by mailing out waring letters is only a scare tatic and different methods are used, one in particular comes to mind was from what was Cork Multichannel in Ireland now Chorus /NTL many years ago deuring a world cup finals they offered free T-shirts for Customers on a Freephone Number ... Of course many thousadns rang in to Claim for there free T.shirts many of them not subscribers... a lot of knocks on doors followed...

Its all a Game and has been going on over Twenty years.... Pay no attention to letters etc, if they can prove anything you would get a knock on the door...

Re letters

I got one of these letters yesterday as well.
Someone one said that it was better to have your original sub box on as well and I think what they are doing is find all of the people on minimum subscription and then find out the ones that are not talking back and hey presto you have a list of suspects to send letters to and scare the pants off (especially the wife).

As many have mentioned previously (always pay for the basic Subscription) when it comes to cable..once your paying money for a monthly subscription you will never pop up on there radar....

give them a phone i did and they said that i got a starview box on september 2007 and paid for it by paypal so who gave them that info

there was a company in the north west busted a good few months back that used to sell boxes, apparently the records that were nabbed by the police were given to virgin

I recall that the company in question traded at a computer fair so most people will have paid cash. So no records. I think.

They cant catch the boxes so they rely on people grassing you up / using records from companies that sold them that the get from plod.

I put my subbed box in the attic years ago.. And I mean years as in that many I can't even remember how many.

I still pay my basic tv/phone/BB package. I ring them up every month moaning about there service and more than not they give me extra tv channels for a month, (probably just to get rid of me doing my Victor Meldrew routine) as I have chipped/used and moved from every model of VM box (always with talk-back cut) upwards and then to Starview and now Kryptview, I can say they either have no idea whether your legit box is on, has been on, or they don't bother looking.

They've even phoned me up and asked whether I'm happy with the freebie baby tv channel they gave me that I moaned out of them.. Of course I still found something else to moan about LOL.

Point being I already have all these channels on my kryptview.. So I reckon if they had the slightest idea my subbed box was playing with spiders in the attic, they'd not bother to switch on and off channels on a box that's never used, or at the very least investigate it!

I agree with other members that buying from ebay and from known distributors that have been busted is a likely way to get a letter.

Their evidence proves you bought a box. It does not prove you have installed and received pay for view channels.

Surely all this is somehow against data protection? For example, all the hardware is legal and its what the individual does with it which matters. So if the police bust a company what right do they have for handing over the details to Virgin?
When the items were bought the company was legitimate.
Its like people who get busted for selling fake Windows cd's over the net. You don't get the police handing over names and addresses of customers to Microsoft right? Am I missing something?

Also would it be a mistake to sell a dbox2 on ebay? Even if I sell as FTA? I don't really want to be on the radar.

The person who just got convicted from Bowlers had 200 of the boxes pre programmed with scrambling software.

You can sell and buy any box (apart from VM boxes which always belong to VM) as long as they are fta with no scrambling software on them.. I believe they're trying to make it illegal to sell/own any box that is capable getting pay to view channels.
