ESPN will go free for UK cable
Chris Forrester 29-07-2009
ESPN?s upcoming Premier League soccer coverage will be free for Virgin Media cable homes, at least for the first month of games.
The special introductory offer will carry the English soccer games as a result of Disney-owned ESPN picking up the Setanta-held broadcasting rights following Setanta?s collapse into bankruptcy. Additional games from Scotland?s top soccer league will also be available to Virgin?s cable viewers.
The introductory offer coincides with ESPN?s launch on August 3 (in standard as well as HDTV), following which Virgin?s subscribers can opt in to the ESPN services for an additional ?8 a month if they already subscribe to any of Sky?s sports channels on cable, or ?10 if they don?t.
ESPN is also offering top-level soccer from Germany, Portugal, Russia and the Netherlands.
