just to add to the argument, sky should be carefull because vm already have the network in place to compete for the main income; football. all vm would have to do is buy the rights create sports channels and sky are dooooooommmeed. i just added in another thread that vm wont be pushed around. when skyone was cut off, they made virgin one

Truth of the matter is virgin will not survive without sky programming.

To dislodge sky as the big daddy virgin will need to invest in Billions of ?? to get all footy rights which sky holds. Even though Virgin media doesnt cover the whole country. Many streets are not cabled. Unlike sky who cover every inch of the UK

IPTV mate, they install cable via bT green boxes to your house, and a modem at 50mb per second, including tv. The infrastracture is being put in place now! No need to dig up streets anymore.
            Keep calm carry on.

true the only reason sky has the biggest and best packages is because it pays more than the other companies for tv rights

this could all change when the renewal of football rights, cricket ect comes up again, now if virgin outbid sky they will control a huge section of the market and sky could be in trouble but i doubt it would ever happen as the cable network is not as strong as satellite network

but i do expect espn sport to try over the next few years to try and move and dislodge sky

Sky's pay TV rivals in pre-emptive strike

                      Friday, August 28 2009,

BT, Top Up TV and Virgin Media have launched a pre-emptive strike against arguments on the subject of Ofcom's pay TV investigation that they expect Sky to advance at this year's Edinburgh International TV Festival.

James Murdoch, who served for four years as Sky's chief executive and remains the broadcaster's chairman in addition to his duties as chairman and chief executive of News Corp for Europe and Asia, will deliver this year's keynote MacTaggart speech. 20 years ago, Murdoch Jr.'s father ****** delivered a caustic MacTaggart where he informed the British broadcasting industry that television as they knew it was about to end - and despite Sky's initial stumbles prior to its merger with rival BSB, Murdoch's vision of a multichannel, commercially-driven TV market in the UK has largely come to fruition.

This year's TV festival comes as Ofcom continues its investigation into the UK's pay television market. The investigation was opened in March 2007 after BT, Top Up TV and Virgin Media - plus the now defunct UK arm of Setanta - complained that Sky had a sufficiently dominant position in the market as to warrant intervention on competition grounds.

Setanta GB's failure in June was subsequently held up by other parties to the Ofcom complaint as evidence of "market failure" in the British pay TV market, a claim strongly denied by Sky, who characterised the assertion as "whingeing".

At the end of June, Ofcom opened the third phase of the pay TV investigation by suggesting it would seek to disrupt Sky's "market power" by regulating access to wholesale content, which Sky said was "unwarranted".

Today, Sky's opponents have sought to bolster their position ahead of an expected onslaught during Murdoch's speech tonight.

"Without intervention to address the market failure in pay TV," the parties argue, "consumers will continue to be harmed and competition will suffer."

They have also issued a point-by-point rebuttal of several planks of Sky's position, saying that Ofcom's proposed intervention would encourage, not chill, investment in pay TV; that Ofcom's proposals do not require Sky to subsidise its competitors; and once again holding up Setanta's failure as evidence that no broadcaster could base a "viable strategy" on outbidding Sky for sports rights.
                      Keep calm carry on.

                        remember this one

                        NDS defends DISH piracy claims

A team of hackers hired by NDS has been accused of flooding the market with pirated smart cards for the US DTH platform DISH, a Californian District Court heard on Wednesday.

The case has been brought by EchoStar Communications against NDS, the smart card security division of News Corp, operator of rival platform DirecTV.

In opening statements, NDS attorney Richard Stone said the company had done nothing illegally to harm or damage EchoStar, but was simply engaged in reverse engineering by obtaining the codes.
The so-called Black Hat Team was said to have rounded up the leading protagonists in smart card piracy in 1998, when the NDS system used by DirecTV was under constant attack by pirates.

The operation was shut down in 2001 following a raid on the home of hacker Chris Tarnovsky. The suit names the NDS research facility in Haifa, Israel as the primary location where the pirated cards were created.

NDS admits it worked with Tarnovsky, but says the primary purpose was to shut down pirate operations.Echostar is claiming copyright violation, conspiracy, and piracy.

                        The case continues.

i dont think the strength of a network would come in to it. if vm outbid sky then sky would have to pay vm for the sports. this would pay for itself in the long run.

Sky could easily pay more for anything and outbid VM but I suppose VM could make it so that they bid lots, but at the last minute let Sky take the channels Murdoch would just fuel Sky with money as this would mean that they would be losing business if they cant get access to Sports/Movies

Until Virmin have a secure network, i think they should have no say in any of this.
