The mpeg 4 stream is great all channels are HD but why not a dual stream. RTE SD and RTE HD.
The current RTE test is Not in HD only Sd 576i

Also RTE could not afford to launch there own satellite service and it costs them millions a year to stay on the Astra 2 satellite.

Not quite true as VM can do a deal with ESPN and they are bigger and have more cash reserves than Murdoch.

I reckon Ofcom will stop any anti competitve deals with Sly and will not allow them total domination. We also have the competition authority in Brussels who forced Sly and the Premier League to share out the top games and show the national tresures Wimbleton F.A cup Final FTA.

As for Sly starting up on cable I have not seen this confirmed anywhere.

Serves them right for not having a legal pub subscription.
