Should I go with indoor aerial or cable?

    Hi

My flat had an aerial extension going into the building. Unfortunately, someone vandalised it, so I could not get TV now and I just paid TV license. I tried this aerial from Argos but did not get any reception.

Buy Digi-Top Indoor Amplified Aerial. at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for .

I tried to fix the outdoor wire connector back, but the copper/metal centre pin broke I think due to lots of bending. I have fixed the wire outside before using duck tape and it works, and seems that it has been fixed been fixed before in this method.

Now, looks like I am reduced to watch lagging or no reception tvcathup. I think I live in a poor reception location, thats why I did not get reception with that aerial.

I also noticed that after the vandalism, some virgin contractor left a leaflet after the vandalising incident saying you've got cable why don't use cable TV. Maybe the person itself vandalised my wire just to get a sale, I am not sure.

So what are my best options to see TV aside from Tvcatchup. Buy another aerial from Argos? If so which one?
I see there are cable wires in the flat, I tried to hook it to the TV but does not fit. I think the previous tennant had cable or something in the house. I am using a LG227MW monitor which doubles as a pc monitor and has built in digital tuner.

    Please advise, thanks

I've returned the aerial back to argos and got a refund

I can try buy every aerial in argos and refund back just to see which works.
This Buy Philex SLx 32DW 32 Element High Gain Outdoor TV Aerial. at Argos.co.uk is cheap but outdoors, which I don't think I can fix it outdoors... I am on the ground floor.

This looks cool but bloody expansive indoor aerial...

the outdoor aerial is your best option, i wouldnt bother with any indoor aerials
for what you will pay for the expensive indoor one you would be better off getting somebody in to fix yours ,and they wont leave till its sorted

I am afraid they will charge me quite a lot for the job. Does this include getting an aerial as well then? or just reconnecting the vandalised wire?

When the wire was working, I could not get freeview as well even though my TV supports it. The outdoor aerial might not support it.

Yes, when the wire was fine, I got only analogue receptiion. Did not get any freeview channels. But BBC1 and 2 are not that sharp compared to the other 3 channels. But there is internet stream for BBC and does not bother me much.

i take it you want freeview then ?

freeview is not accesible to everyone there are factors which can stop you getting a signal such as tree's and buildings you may find that if where your aerial is pointing there are big trees or buldings you will never get a signal no matter what aerial you use

if you have nothing in the way you should be ok getting the aerial sorted but if you do you may need cable or freesat to view tv

i have just had to down 2 big trees for me nan to get a freeview reception after her signal slowly started to dissapear this was due to the grrowth of the trees out the back from the previous year

I cannot see any TV now due to someone vandalising the outdoor wire. I want at least back the 5 default channels. Freeview is a plus

yes i gathered so you need your aerial sorting out, indoor aerials are no good,my point was if you have big buldings or big trees in the way it wont matter what aerial you have

you may need satellite or cable to view your tv if your reception area is poor do other people around you have problems like your neighbours or is theres ok

If the cable feed in your property is still live, then you might want to look into getting one of the cable receivers, such as Dreambox, Eurovox or Starview.

thats a very good point m8 but my only concern would be that it free cable may not be around for much longer and if you havent got the money to waste on taking a chance spending the money on a decent aerial or similar may be wiser

on the other hand if you get another six months you have more than had your moneys worth regarding paying subs so its whatever suits really

Is there a problem with the forums? I could not log in for the past 4 hours.

I live on a street where all the buildings on both sides of the roads are 4 stories tall and all connected to one another. Some of my neighbours use satelite, some use cable. Outside of the building is full of wires and dishes so I can't really say who uses what. I know my neighbour ontop uses cable.

How do I check if the cable wire is still alive? I am using virgin internet.

I was thinking of Dreambox, now that the virgin contractor vandalised the aerial wire...

If I get a person to fix the aerial, will there be any damages to the flat? I am a tennant, not the owner of the flat, so I am not sure if the letting agent is keen on me modifying the flat. will placing an outdoor aerial like the link I gave previously indoors work? ?16 is cheaper than that ?62 indoor aerial. I have seen the previous tennant using a TV with indoor aerial mounted to the TV and that worked.

Is there a way to check for reception strength?

If you are using the VM internet service then the cable feed is live. I would personally recommend getting a cable receiver, since you won't have any worries about signal quality. There are some concerns about VM moving to Nagravision 3, but it's likely to be some time before that happens. You will definitely get your money's worth out of the cable receiver.
