VM are currently rolling out FTTP. It looks like Bolton is one of those areas:-

Find out about fibre broadband in Bolton including network availability, providers, packages, download speeds and deals. Bolton fibre broadband.

        News about rollout:-

Hmmm! you have to be careful of what they call Fibre as BT infinity and currently virgin still use Copper Cable to the premises on normal homes business excluded unless you pay BT to run you Fibre optic cable to your house which i would imagine is not cheap.

I know VM have been upgrading street cabinets lately actually gutting them and putting in new internals TAP's etc.. but this is still copper cable to your house

this was posted in April with no mention of the North west

          Fibre rollout

Virgin Media has already started to roll out fibre to the premise (FTTP) in Cambridgeshire and Leicestershire with work expected to start soon in West Yorkshire, Devon and East Sussex
This quote from the Bolton media from the link is very misleading:
Virgin Media owns and operates one network, which it exclusively uses to deliver FTTP (Fibre To The Property) broadband at speeds up to 100Mbps to large parts of Bolton, and up to 120Mbps in upgraded areas.
I have 200mb here just on the old fashion copper cable, that piece is way outdated

If you have Fibre to the premises and no copper, then you're out of luck. The Cable TV still uses copper to the premises. You would need to subscribe to a basic TV service from VM to get the copper Cable TV feed

So basically you never had a Fibre Optic connection after all you had the same as the rest of us mere mortals which is Fibre delivered over Copper cable
