twin cabel into house what is it?

Hi when we moved into our property the previous occupiers had cable(NTL) after renovation and extension works the builders left the cable(completely unprotected) by our front elevation. Theres about 2 ft now out of the ground. There are two cables bound together, one is thicker than the other. One seesm like a coaxed cable the other nor so sure? Question is; are these cables still enabled(live) and why are there 2 cables. If I went to virgin would they be able to use these cables?
    Thx

Think one cable is for tv and one for telephone.

ah yes thanks, how silly of me... do you think that the cable will still be 'live' given that its been dormant for 6-7 years, was hoping to get virgin services, according to their website I am in the area that they can supply, or do they lay new cable to my property?
      Thx

The cable already laid will be ok to use. They will just patch it into your house and then turn it on at their end. They turn it on at the green metal cabinet which will be situated on a nearby rd

A exposed cable being that old may have to be replaced, as these cables if not properly protected from the elements will in time deteriorate and you may encounter signal fluctuations, call VM and ask for the cable to be tested, should the cable require to be replaced then a new siamese drop cable will be installed which is as you mentioned a RG6/2 Pair Telephone cable combined this will always be laid into a 50mm flexible conduit to protect the cable.

          Happy New Year,

Thanks all for replies, can I test the cable, say using a multi meter looking for voltage between the core and the outer braid?
