Before you buy ANY BOX read this first

    FREE CABLE TV IS OVER
SAVE YOUR MONEY DON'T BUY A CABLE BOX
IF YOU ARE LUCKY YOU MAY GET A FEW WEEKS OUT OF IT BUT THAT IS IT
YOU WILL HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF

I am amazed although not surprised with the amount of Newbies arriving on the forums asking for help with their new box
There must be some really unscrupulous sellers out there trying to clear all their stock before they end up with a lockup full of paper weights
Should we feel sorry for the buyers or is it their own fault for not actually researching what they are buying.
I spent days reading up on D-box's all those years ago before deciding to buy one.
Then hours of trial & error and tinkering after i had it.
Those were in the good old days before everybody jumped on the band wagon because they all thought it was easy.

We enjoyed it while it lasted and will all miss it when it goes for good

I agree with you and cannot believe the eejits that are still buying boxes on that well known auction site where people auction off their unwanted rubbish.I sold on a box to someone the other day and only lost ?10 on it.I told him it could last one day or one month or if he was realy lucky pot luck. It's still the attitude that they are getting something for nothing.

It's not the sellers it's the buyers IMO.

        1. They haven't researched their purchase
        2. They are greedy enough to buy something to steal a tv service.
        3. They may just be hopeing for a miracle and any info they may have read is wrong.
        4. As a seller or retailer do you honestly think they would say don't buy this.
        5. It's dog eat dog unfortunately. Do you think beta max or toshiba refunded the customers that bought the beta max players or HD DVDs?

I bought an ex7000 knowing that things may go belly up but it was a gamble as to how long we'd have left. I made a mistake and now it's someone elses. As I was told by a retailer of these boxes " if it does what you want it to just now then buy it if you think it'll be worth it ".

It's all a matter of choices.

In fairness those that do their homework properly may be able to bag a real bargain.

Some dealers are punting boxes for under ?40. Not got a clue what price they go for on ebay. If your area has not even upgraded to 3.7 I suspect you will get a few months out of it. For what you get under ?40 is an absolute steal particularly with a couple of box office events on the cards in the next few weeks - if you watch them that is.

Like everything you pay your money and take your chance. Its those that buy the box thinking there is some magic N3 fix that need their head examined.

I personally think that a lot of newbies use this site to get a quick fix and are never heared of again, unless they require another fix or need talking through a fix, I also think you should not be able to virtually download images, tutorials, and other updates straight away but should contribute to the site before taking, when nag 3 is finalised across the UK lets see how many give up the ghost and will only surface in the unlikely event of a crack for nag 3.....chuck

you would be amazed at the number of people who think a fix is out, I use to sort out friend/family Dbox, dreambox and eurovox

since my area went to N3 here are the examples of calls friends/family have made to me

              - mate calls up and says can I do CS for Sky, I say sure no problems, bring his dreambox over and bring me the C line for cccam.. mate asks whats that ??

              - friend opposite me who's dbox I sorted out, comes over and someone at work says a fix is out for N3, I asked him to get my the info on the fix and I will be happy to sort it out. that was 2 weeks ago - still waiting for the so called N3 fix

              - uncle reckons from a mate a fix will be out in a few days - explained to him how N3 works, been out on sat scene for years and no fix so whats the chance of a fix all of a sudden cos VM have moved over

                Thanks to all

Well, thanks very much all of you above.

Yes, us 'Noobs' / 'newbies' etc do come to this site when we need some technical advice. Stupidly, we are under the impression that this is what this site is for. Not all of us are blessed with the knowledge and experience that you have and have a difficult time enough trying to understand all the abbreviations that you clever people write on your posts and expect us to understand what you're on about. Thats why it puts us off visiting, sometimes the more you read, the more confusing it gets and responses like these make you not bother. We ask a question and get told to go all over the forum to find the answers ourselves which is nigh on impossible given the amount of threads, or we're told how thick we are and how impatient you are with us. Some of us work and run homes and don't have the time to sit and learn this stuff all day and night.

As for trying to get some free channels, isn't that what you've all done and are doing? I take exception to the patronising way you treat us newbies as thick and greedy, jumping on a bandwagon trying to get something for nothing. I do happen to be paying to a cable tv company, I bet half of you clever people aren't paying anything and haven't for years. You were thick like us too once upon a time.

Fortunately there are some nice people on here, but all you clever, know everything, patronising types create the problems you actually complain about. So, leave it to the nice people to respond or have a think about yourselves and change your attitude.

It was not meant at people like yourself, you can be bothered to join in and give a response back, and I personally respect that, its geared at people that take the pennie and run...chuck

                    Tetchy

Have got 2 eurovoxs that are pootling along nicely and have just decorated the back room and bought a nice new telly - so what better than to get a new box, then we can all retreat to our own rooms and watch what we want.

Went back to the guy we bought the other 2 boxes off, so no reason to mistrust him, not from Ebay or Amazon. The assistant showed me the nice new slim modern box to go with the new bedroom - great, and a bargain too. Downloaded the latest firmware from this site and it just will not have it. Been googling and all over this site for over a week now in case theres something I haven't seen, etc to find out why it won't flash and only just found out about this nagra 3. Never heard of it before, never had to.

I have to go back to him because I do read the advice and try to have a go, but although I was successful with the max vs, I have totally wrecked my Dreambox 500 following instructions how to flash it from various sources - it hasn't worked for about a year. I've left this with him to try to fix but he's since told me he can't. Probably because he's already conned me once but theres no point in fixing the DB if it's all going off soon. So when I go to pick that up, I'll have a go at him for taking my money and taking me for a fool when all I was doing was being trusting as I had no reason to be otherwise.

From the bits and pieces I've managed to find, I wanted to be sure that this box was no good and there wasn't anything I was missing before I take it back to the fella I bought it off but I ended up feeling like a thief and even more foolish.

I give up now, nice stiff drink and then bed.

                    Goddnight!

                        Hi

I am a newbie and had some great advice of people already...so thanks for that.

I have paid for my SKy cable service the full package for the last 12 years and just cancelled it. I have loads of friends who have got on the chipd box wagon!- insisting we should do it. So much so they convinced my hubbie to get VM basic package especially for it.

Did a bit of reserach on my own and found this site.. Hubbie is a techno phobe and is well impressed with you lot...just wished I'd chkd before we shelled out on Virgin ooops!!...Had intended to buy a Eurovox this week....totally gutted about this N3 thing... and none of my friends have a clue about it!!but glad I've found out now

VM seems really Naff in comparison to sky- now trying to work out whether to go back to sky or perservere with virgin! LOL...that'll learn us wont it!

Virgin is excellent in my mind.. but I use a V+HD box and subscribe to the XL package..

It's on demand package outstrips anything Sky has to offer currently..

I'm not too impressed with Sky Germany or Sky Italia but i'm using a satellite dreambox to receive them, if i had an official box it'd be a different matter..

upshot is, don't judge a service if you are using non standard equipment to steal your pictures

It's not a case of being clever or knowing it all. The information is out there, I'm sure even for the non technologically minded people out there they still have the capability to use google or a search bar.

And i can't see anyone in this thread being patronising or horrible either. You ask the question, you get the answer. It's not personal, probably just people fed up answering the same questions day in day out.

As I said before it's all down to choice.

                            You research or don't.
                            You take advice or dont.
You buy on the advice or don't.

Can't blame other folk for your choices.
Were all new at it to start, some still are considering how long these units have been going.... I've had 1 for 4 years and still don't understand majority of it
and yeah were all a bit naughty for taking it free but why have a dig and bark yourself?
