rs232 - lan adapters

ok, this may have been answered before but here goes,

i may be wrong but i am led to believe the the starview hd combi box (first 500 produced without lan) can have this adapter fitted into the rs232 which will allow them to connect to the lan and then connect to the server.
assuming this is correct, why can't the older boxes use this connector in the same way? would it then just be a case of finding new firmware?
this may all be totally wrong but surely it's a thought???

but when the boxes went down before some genius kept us all up to date with new fixes etc, so maybe theres hope???? well i hope
