Is there any truth in a rumour?

I have heard a rumour in the past 5 minutes,
The VM guys are going around in a van and finding out who is receiving illegal cable.

I dunno how much of this is true, because from my understanding , the signal which comes from the cable is the same for the internet and tv, so in theory if your paying for the internet (then a signal is already coming to your house - and how are they gonna prove you are receiving illegal cable) especially also coz there is no feedbackon the boxes either. But on the other hand if your not paying for anything and the signal is live - should there be something to worry about or would they just simply switch the line off?

    Any comments very much appreciated....

end of the day worst thing they can do is call at your door, and by which point you don't have to let them in,so what they gonna do break in? least if they come once gives you time to put your original box in and hide the illegal one and simply play dumb, where is the proof? wouldn't worry

i used to be a line manager with ntl, i dont think they have that kind of technology!!!

the information/signal is already there at the end of cable going into your house, whether it be broadband, cable etc etc etc it is the actual box that scrambles the signal dependant on which package you are subscribed to(or not!!!!)

as you said, if your already paying for one of their sevices then they would have no reason to suspect, also they have no legal right to enter your property!!

the worst they would do is disconnect in the base unit in street!!!

        hope this helps...

if you pay for minimum subscription you will be ok, they wont be able to tell. however if you nick cable, without paying any subscription. they possible could find out by doing tests on the green boxes down the street.

What tests might these be then? (on the cabs that you are talking about)

i think they can test for bandwith drain in individual lines, if oyur paying they would suspect. But if its meant to be a dead line then.........im only guessing

The problem they would have in doing this is..... there can be as many as 100 cables or more in these cabs or mux's, firstly they would have to go to a suspected address, and open up the omni box on the wall in the garden, and using an amp and toner, they would connect the amp up to the cable, then go back to the cab, then use the toner, (wand) and put it near all the cables one at a time until they got the familiar "bleep", THEN they would know that is the cable that goes back to the house....... a lot of work involved here, and it wouldnt tell them much about an illegal box either

I know a couple of people with legit installations who don't have a box on the wall outside - the cable goes directly into the house
