The latest version of nagravision, 3 is much improved. Its two generations up from the existing obsolete nagravision 1 used by VM.
Its not as simple as a new card, its much more complicated than that, The oldest boxes may not be able to handle Nagra 3 and all boxes will require a major software change.
If VM were to issue nagravision 3, there will be no hacking any time soon, some European packages have been using nagra 3 for the past year or so. So far none have been hacked even for a single day
Nagra 3 appears to be just as secure as Sky's NDS encryption if not more, Just think, when was Sky last publicly hacked, NEVER
Im no expert but i have read on satellite forums nagra 3's a strong encryption, not a pushover like nagra 1
If there was a change this big being planned, we would have heard about it here in the UK, I beleive Chorus etc... can afford this encryption purely because they have a small subscriber base. The whole of the UK is a different matter, and will cost them millions and millions. This will not happen anytime soon I don't think. Can you imagine the amount of VM Subscribers who are then going to switch to sly if this happens. VM will more than likely go out of business. I am a subscriber and would cut them loose as soon as this happened. It wouldn't surprise me if sly were behind this somehow. I think they know that VM will die as a result, because most people who have dodgy boxes have a subscription anyway. My Phone bills are ludicrous and I can also get cheaper broadband.
My two penneth anyway :-)

Reason: typo
I would also go to sly if VM changed encryption. Vm will loose their ?30 pm from me.
If vm read these forums we should all let them know the truth, they will spend a lot of ??? to loose a lot of customers. Does not sound like good bussiness sense.
Virgin arent using Nagra 3 going forward, they've committed to having IPTV running by 2011 (that's internet protocol television), which is pretty much what BT are using with BT Vision, only more advanced.
It's in operation in Italy, & as far as I'm aware hasnt been hacked & is extremely secure.
I think its a case of wait and see, no one on here can be sure on what will happen, Just a note though if VM focus on iptv, this is even worse because iptv needs talkback as its an internet based system so hacking will be risky.
I think that iptv will be difficult for VM though because if they send out as many channels as they currently have over iptv it will be a major leech on bandwidth. This is why i think nagra 3 is an easier option, but who knows

you will find if you search that nagravision 3 is mediagaurd 3, i know i`m running a High Def satellite reciever, the spanish channels are using what you know has nagravision 3, comes up on my reciever as mediagaurd 3?
On balance I think the IPTV route is the more likely (though it may be a bit further away...say 2010). One effect of IPTV, apart from requiring "talkback" return path, would be that the IP control would effectively be moved back from the user's "STB" to the VM (TV-IP) server. ie there wouldn't be a conditional access system at the customer's end......it would be at VM's end.
This would presumeably allow VM to know/approve all IP addresses. And the converse, non-subscriber IP addresses could be blocked. Worse yet, those IP addresses could be relatively easily traced (since they are issued by VM!!)....leading to a "knock at the door" from those friendly VM people.
I may have to go back to satellite on the basis that Nagra3 may ultimately be easier to deal with than IPTV VM-style.
(Don't shoot the messenger....PLEASE!)
PS Thanks for the recent ROMs & Key work. And thanks to DevilFish (cheers G) All your support is much appreciated......by the usually silent majority.

All i know is that some companies use two conditional access systems, so the satellite channel in question may broadcast in nagravision and mediaguard, for example D+ Spain uses both mediaguard 2 and nagravision 3.
Therefore your satellite receiver is receiving the channel using mediaguard and not nagravision 3.
