the 780 will work better without an attenuator because its not an hd box..
with hd signals theres more content then sd signals so therefore hd signals need to be compressed.
with hd and its compressed signals its more to do with the timing of the qam as any errors here will need to be compansated for and corrected and this is less noticable on a low signal then it is with a high signal hence the improvement when using an attenuator...
so yes at this moment in time i would say the signal strengh is a little more critical on the 850 then it is on the 780 because its an hd box..
but i wouldnt think it will always be like this
