    virmin signal

For the past few days my internet connection will not work through a
splitter it will only work of a morning and late at night during the day I have to remove the splitter to get internet I have friends in the area they seem to be fine. There are some problems noted on their site. This has never happened before . Are they stopping the boxes by lowering the signal of a day thanks

I would be looking at the splitter first try another one then you can eliminate it from your list of possibilities................

    Mines ok..............
I know you believe you understand what you think i said

I have tried a couple of splitters and cables it seems time related as though the signal is weaker of a day

perhaps u do not pay for a tv signal it may cause this but wouldnt think so, id go along with lagerlands assumption or if the box outside property has a splitter? it could be faulty.

best to state what way things are wired,do you mean the lan splitter or the coaxial cable splitter, any superhub routers etc?does it just need a reboot.

I have a cable feed coming into the house. On the cable feed I have a two way splitter, one end leads to a surfboard modem the other to the a780. the signal works fine untill about 10-11 oclock in the morning at which point the modem will not go online. If I remove the splitter the modem will then go online. I have tryed a couple of splitters and different cables. although the modem doesnt go online I can still get the free channels on the a780. The modem will then go online at about 10-11 oclock in the night.hope this info helps

there are a couple of problem mentioned on their site:

"You might not be able to watch certain programmes on Catch Up TV and TV On Demand on your Virgin TV or TiVo? service at the moment."

this problem, however, seems affected by the time of day.

              thanx

Out of interest, have you compared the sig strength & quality of the TV signal before & after the modem stops working, to see if they reduce?

just to update everyone who helped. I think it must have been a local signal problem it has stayed on since i came home at 4.

                    thanx again

On an unrelated issue I contacted virgin. They said that the signal drops and gets higher at separate periods of the day such as one morning the signal may be low coming into your house and the next morning it can be high. If the signal goes below a certain number it will effect people with a splitter as the modem can not cope to run on such a low signal with a splitter.

Its fairly usual for any RF signal, even those down coax, to be affected by various changing parameters throughout the day, not least by temperature.

If your affected by such things then your first port of call is a VM engineer who should increase your signal level to compensate. Note that if you dont have a VM subscription stb then chances are you shouldn't have a splitter so the engineer will simply remove it (adding around 3dB to the signal level in the process).

Alternatively you could try a signal amplifier. This should be placed into the cable at the ingress point before any splitters and MUST be of a type with reverse path functionality if you expect a modem to work (Konig Yellow brick type is good although expensive). Amplifiers will increase your signal level but will also increase noise levels, usually making your overall signal/noise ratio worse. If your main problem is one of noise rather than absolute signal level then an amplifier will NOT work for you.
