Someone said on another thread, or maybe it was another forum, that the KV boxes are more suited to the hobbyist rather than your average punter and I totally agree. The days of plug it in and leave it boxes are long gone.

So unless your father in law is willing to learn how to set it up and even more relevant is willing to accept that they come with known problems then no I wouldn't recommend you got him one.

All that is going to happen is he will end up pestering you constantly when it doesn't work perfectly, and that is one of the reasons I didn't get one for my folks.

A hobbyist's STB? The KV is a plug n play box there is not much you can do with it as the source is not open. A hobbyist's STB would be something like a Dreambox or similar open source receiver.

I agree it's not a hobbyist STB, but that's not what I said.

I said maybe they are more suited to a hobbyist who will have more experience with setup/problem solving than your average punter. To your average punter, I would argue these boxes are far from plug and play.

Maybe a bad choice of terminology on my part, my bad!

No problem and I understood your context, but if you can't "problem solve" a KV better off getting a wind up STB Most average punters know where Google is.

I would go with satellite and CS.

Considering it myself now as the KV service absolutely sucks and there isn't anywhere for support. It's all far too cloak and dagger.

and you think its all kvs fault and your setup is perfect and no problems with your provider? too many variables to consider to upset people.
yes given options sat is better but people have limited choice.

There's just no interest in the cable side of things now. No support - just hearsay.

I know enough about what I'm doing to figure out if it's a problem at my end, a problem with the provider or a problem with the server side.

For example, this is what I went through to fault find my current situation with stacks of channels missing....

Factory Reset, delete all channels, off for an hour.
Box on, scan for channels (350+ found, not sure how many radio channels)
Situation with the same channels remained.
Factory Reset, delete all channels, off for an undetermined amount of time.
All splitters removed, all attenuators removed, single length of short cable from outside box to inside box routed through the wall and plugged in.
Box turned on, scan for channels (350+ found, again unsure of radio channels)
Signal was at its peak, most channels were working with very little glitching.
Checked previous non-working channels, still non-working.
Put variable attenuator in place, picture quality remained the same, glitching depended on attenuator setting but wasn't any better than with none.
Regardless, checked previous non-working channels, still not working.
Went through 5 of the non-working ones varying the attenuation from 0 to max on each channel, no difference.

At this point I came on the forum and asked if anyone else was noticing. There aren't many people interested any more so responses were slim but it was pointed out that glitching has been an issue at the moment. From this I took it that perhaps there was some work going on in the background.

FFWD to now, it's recommended for me to do yet another scan. I do, the situation is the same other than one of the channels has returned (it had disappeared altogether leading me to believe it was a provider error). The state of the other channels still remains the same.

So yes, I think it's KVs fault. These boxes are pretty rubbish to be honest. The tuner is crap and needs constant tweaking with attenuators. The box isn't made from quality components, the firmware is the buggiest I have ever used and yet there are no reasonably frequent updates to iron out the creases. It paints a picture of noone being interested, no drive, no information and nothing other than cryptic clues and hearsay from people who may or may not be in the know.

The caveat of course is that it's all I've got. As rubbish as it is, I'm stuck with it as I don't want a satellite stuck on the side of my house and I don't want to pay the ridiculous costs involved to watch the UFC every now and again. KV and their service are defended on here time after time for no other reason than it would appear to be insulting a friend, or something of that nature.

Scrambled channel points to one issue IMO. Every other issue can be debated (glitching, bad signals, channels disappearing), this can't.
