The tuners in subscription boxes have a much greater dynamic range than those usually found in 3rd party boxes. Partly because of this vm cable installations have quite a high chance of being 'out of spec' as the installers usually just connect the box, switch it on and check you get a selection of channels. They simply dont have the time or skill to optimise the signal levels to individual customers.
On top of that snag, tuners themselves have tolerances. This means if you have two supposedly identical boxes and a 'marginal' signal then you may find one box seems to work whilst the other doesn't.
In your case, the 850 box and the 780 box have physically different tuners with different characteristics so the posibility of one box working in a given situation whilst the other does not is even greater. Both tunuers are actually nominally correctly specified for VM's cable network but the actual network is itself out of spec.
There's not really too much you can do about this except maybe get vm to fix your connection which they will only do if your subbed box is having problems. Generally VM seem incapable of providing in-spec connections to large amounts of customers on certain network segments. Even if they 'fix' your connection chances are the fix will only last until some other customer on your node requires a similar tweak, at which point all previous tweaks are broken.
