forward path attenuator

hi all,

any one know what a forward path attenuator is, or i think its also know as a digital signal filter?

has 6db on it, fitted on my tv cable.

any ideas what it does?

basically it (attenuates) reduces the signal, normally fitted to lines with too strong a signal
