If you are using a usb to serial adaptor and the adaptor has been recognised when plugged in try the following:
This is in Windows 7 but should be similar in XP.
Click the Windows Start button on the bottom leaft of you screen.
Right click on Computer
Click on Manage
Click on Device Manager
Then on Ports (Com & LTP) (If Ports is not showing you may need the drivers installing)
Right Click on USB to Serial Comm Port (Note the port number first)
Click on Properties (at this point it should say the device is working proper)
Click on Port Settings:
Make sure the Bits per sec is set to 115200
Data Bits to 8
Parity None
Stop Bits 1
Flow Control None
Click OK
Close the windows and start the STB Loader
If you have the correct port number in the loader you should be ok.
Perhaps someone who uses XP could check and give details of how to change the settings.

Data Bits to 8
Parity None
Stop Bits 1
I've followed all the advice but I still get "downloading is not requested". I'm using Null modem to usb serial adaptor, says it's working correctly, have chosen the correct com port, increased bps as suggested, but still no joy so far. At the moment my brand new 780 is as good as my old Eurovox's - please has anybody got any other suggestions or managed to crack this?

If the usb to serial is working correctly try to find the correct comm port number. If you have a number of usb's try others. I have six usb ports but the adaptor will only work in two of them.
Thanks, I just gave it a go. I have two at the front (ports 3 and 4) and two at the back (ports 5 and 6) Tried all of them and still the same result. Anything else to try?
box has to be powered off at rear, then press download count to three and power on box,if it still does not work, the null modem cable have you flashed boxes with it before?
Still no joy. I'm using the cable that came free with the box. I do have another that I used for my old eurovox so I'll give that a go now. Thanks and anything else that could help..............
Turned out to be the usb adaptor that was causing the problem. I have a very old PC in one of the kids rooms and that has a couple of ports that the null modem cable plugged straight into without the need for the usb adaptor. First one didn't work, but tried on the other and away we went.
All up and running now and I must say I'm very impressed. Picture quality is very good and the epg and favourites menu are far superior (IMHO) to the eurovox.
