It's to run another piece of cable to another box or modem, or something that uses VM cable

Then the cable will "loop through" the box to other devices when it is off. Like up to a bedroom box.

doesnt work when main box is off and doesnt work with modems so its best not to use it and use splitter instead.

Never knew that, having never used it myself... sounds useless then.

I find it works fine. Used to use it with two boxes so that you can record one channel while watching another. Box does need to at the least be in standby for the signal to pass through.

Just wondering if andrew is saying it works fine for him when main box is off and/or with a modem which would be weird.

powering off at rear at night would effect other things plugged in that is why only remote is used to power off, cant remember if there is a setting in menu to switch on for use first

It defo don't work on modems n don't need to be in standby or even on as it's a simple pass through

I wanted to ask about this myself.

I'm trying to run my legit box through this loop and avoid using a splitter. At first appears to work fine - but it but I can't seem to access tv on demand/BBC iPlayer. Also I have a flashing led over the channel display on the front of the (legit) box that I recall from a previous life means that it's failing to talk back to HQ.

Anybody able to access iPlayer through the loop?

Yep tuners in most of these type boxes do not have any return path capability so loop out wont work with modems or interactive services of proper boxes. And it doesnt work when its off at all.

                            Thanks for that.

Shame though it makes for a much neater installation.
And let's be realistic, most folk are going to want to plumb in a KV alongside their original box. A missed opportunity by the manufacturer. Though I suppose a few yen saved is a few yen earned, and it boosts sales of splitters.
