thanks for replying for a start mate

anyways on the openmedia box i put the ip to 192.168.1.1 and ensured that dhcp was set,
          after i rebooted i had a look,
and its automatically changed to 192.168.1.10 and dhcp is still on,
i have ensured the dhcp on the gaming adapter is on too.

i have installed the cd that comes with my gaming adapter but
how am i suppose to connect my wireless router to the gaming adapter wirelessly???
do i have to configure settings on my router??

          am confused!

will have a read and comeback to soon mate..

Ok what i do is I have my xbox and a dreambox connected using these belkin jobbies..

I set a fixed IP in each of them

So my netgear router is 192.168.1.1
my pc and laptops are on dhcp and pick up whatever
My Dm has a fixed IP of 192.168.1.5
My xbox has a fixed IP of 192.168.1.7

I set these fixed ip address in their wireless gaming adapters.

If i remember rightly the software set up prog they give you is a little crap and does not save it into the belkin so well. So i did it 2 or 3 times.

I had to switch off the laptop wifi when i set it up as it was possible the router was getting confused having two devices using the same hostname etc.. The disconnected the belkin from my laptop and connected it to my xbox/dm and voila it worked.

I sed fixed ip on these as i saw no point in using dhcp due to the amount of devices i have coming on and off my network and that i wanted to port forward the device in my router to access it from the internet.

              Does this make sense..?

it does sort of make sense!
                ok, so for a start,
i'll try and copy your connections because,
i also have a netgear router with the same ip - 192.168.1.1,
so what i'll do is change the ip from dchp to a fixed ip in my gaming adapter to 192.168.1.5,
and on the openmedia box to a fixed IP of 192.168.1.5 (i'll untick dchp and it will be a fixed one exactly like your!)

so in a nutshell the ip's on the gaming adapter and on my openmedia box will be the same

now in regards to the port forwading bit confused with this bit,
do i have to put the same ip and port number
in the port forwarding page of my router to allow internet access???
what exactly do i have to do??

The port forwarding is in your router, you forward the ip address of your box on port 80. this means that when you type in the external ip of your router the openmedia will come up with its webinterface logon. To access your router remotely you need to type the external ip and the port 8080 e.g ***.***.***.***:8080

i do not have an openmedia box so I am unsre of the capabilities etc..

Lets get your box working on your internal network first..

under my router page you want me to then go on port forwading,
click on add custom service call it 'openmedia',
for service type do i choose 'tcp/udp' or 'tcp' or 'udp'??
do i also put starting ports as 80 and ending ports as 80?
                    put the ip 192.168.1.5

am i on the right sort of lines???

I don't think you want the same ip on both, as it will clash.
Silly question, but have have enabled "wireless" on the router, and it it is on have you got anything else wireless that you can scan with, to see if you can find your router. i.e. PSP, Wii, Mobile phone, coz sometimes it is better to work backwards to see if the router is putting out a signal...

ian mate, within the gaming adapters settings you can search to see wireless connections,
and i can see my wireless connection available with the strength and encryption type next to it,
so i assume 'wireless' is enabled on my router

p.s i have not done anything with port forwarding on my router web page

As i said before, ignore the port forwarding for now... That is for another day.

Just get your box talking to your router for now.. Put the router IP address in as the gateway, will not heard to put it in as the nameserver also.

                              ok nige mate,
on the openmedia box i've put the openmedia ip as 192.168.1.5,
which is the same as the gaming adapter,
                              i have unticked dhcp,
                              subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
                              put the gateway as 192.168.1.1
and left the nameserver as it is which is 127.0.0.1
                              what next?

p.s the wireless sign is flashing on the gaming adapter
i think it means its connected wirelessly,
                              but i could be wrong!
