    Starview/eurovox vs Linux boxes?

HI All ......im new to this but im fast learner so hopefully with a bit of help from you guy/girls i'll get up to speed pretty sharpish?

Right first things first i've just stumbled on this site and like what i see, after spending the last 2/3 hours trying to decide what box i wanna buy im non the wiser

basically from looking at the boxes i like the sound of th starview 4 as in future i can record from it when i get harddrive (although i dont think i would use this very often but nice that option is there) also sound fairly easy to set up - which is good for me as a beginner BUT from reading posts there seems to be quite afew 'experienced' users that prefer the openness?? of linux boxes basically what are the benifits of linux boxes?? and do they out way the ease of use to the starviews??

I think im pretty set on the starview 4 but IS this the best box to go for? for around ?115ish mark? is it better to go for cheaper starview 3 ?90ish or even dare i say it CLONE box for about ?40 (am i right in thinking that there are no clones of the SV4 at present?)

also any recommended places to get a box from? (if its allow on this site - soryy if its not) also how much should i be looking at paying?

Many thanks for your time and hope to contribute to help other newbies in the future

From reading about recent developments and potential changes to service from VM are they likely to render starviews etc useless in the near future?? as i dont really wanna fork out for box if it will be useless in a months time?? i could cope with 6 months as it will have paid for its self by then..... should i hold off for a bit

many thanks again 2 any one that can help

VM don't have the money to render these boxes useless.

It will require a large scale change to Nagra3 or a complete change of platform.

Never the less i think you can invest safely for the time being.

So it looks like Starview4 for Remmie. But I like the Linux based boxes from what I've seen. I've seen how a Linux box can be customised and how lovely the interface and display are. They have lots of features. You could set up widescreen, letterbox, 4:3, auto-detect etc. I know that starview 1 is not the best for screen setting, browsing for channels, etc. But that may have been improved on the SV4 box. Can anyone point out the difference between the old and new? Improvements on SV4?

Can you buy a hard drive and just slot it in on SV4? or would you need to buy some hardware for it to fit?

                        Thanks

i would advise to get a dreambox mate, linux based it has the best support of any box and more features than any box, you can get the for about ?60, you can connect it to a router and watch tv on your pc, record directly to your pc, updates via the internet. loads more features.
