Drivers for null cable

Hi, before you do a flas update on the box super (which keeps failing) do i need to download drivers for the null cable? if so what do these actually do and how do i do it ? please forgive a computer numpty but i must have tried to flash my box about 40 times now and that is honestly no bull***t,any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Are you using usb or serial port on computer

I am using a maplins (NIKKAI) L17BT cable which is 9 pin female both ends and goes directly from a serial port on the back of my dektop pc.
