    Internet connection to box

    Morning,
I have a Starview 6 box downstairs where there is a cable wire but no internet. The internet connection is upstairs, I do not want a internet wire running down the stairs. Is there anything that could be brought to enable internet on the box, if you could provide me a link from a website or something where this can be solved? That would be great as the box downstairs is just sitting idle.

"roberts your father" is from the adage "bobs your uncle" , meaning with the pair of homeplugs you are sorted

        basically you have 3 alternatives

        1) the cheapest , buy and fit a long ethernet cable from the router to the box , typical cost of say around ?5 on flea... ( or install cat5e cable and sockets either end like I have done )

        2) the vonets wireless bridge adapter , connected at the sv end and connects wireless to your router same as a laptop would

        3) the dearest option is the pair of homeplugs to extend the lan over the house wiring as stated in the first reply

so you have to extend your lan by cat5e cable , or ethernet cable , or a vonets wifi adapter , or a pair of homeplugs

        the choice.... is yours

Thanks Ramjet. I would go for option 2 (Vonets bridge apapter) as it the cheapest due to the fact I do not want wires going through stairs.
Although have second thoughts as just been informed that I have to pay per box for subscription, I thought Starview just turn on through your Mac address meaning and other added box will work, but I thought wrong, l.

you are thinking of how the old sv support worked , not its replacement

its a pay before you view job from now on , with a new support and not the previous one that got busted

the same answers I gave you would still apply even with a kv a780 or a lan connected satellite box , so you would have the same lan problem no matter which box you used , and if its a ppv box then its pay per box , not per address

Just out of interest how does this new sub service works, Starview enable the service by looking at the box number, i.e. machine I.d then enabling the channels?

I hardly think they are going to tell you or me or anyone how it works , but yes , what you have asked is basically correct , your mac code is used and issued with an expiry date by the srvr which your box is told when it logs into the srvr , thats my understanding of it

so they are controlling the expiry by logging it to your unique mac

Hmmm dammit, I dont think my mum will pay for another box. I will tell her how it works now, as she thinks she as payed for it all, i.e. both boxes. Ahwell at least one works I guess

if you had 2 ford focus on the drive , and paid road tax on one , insurance on it , filled it up with petrol and correctly licensed it , surely she would not believe that the other untaxed , uninsured , unlicensed and empty tank ford focus was also covered under the same deal ?

she is getting mixed up with the tv license or council tax , that covers the premises/address and not just one item or person

any cs is always paid for on a single box basis , 2 boxes requiring 2 authorisations and 2 payments , 3 requiring 3 payments , etc

Thats fine Ramjet. If you could see it from her before as before this new sub service it used to be all boxes working from new software update etc. Things are different now which I have explained.

Thanks for you help again though at least I know if I was to get the other box activated how to enable it to work with the Vonets option out of the others given

in theory they were all sold with 12 months already paid for in the box , so an update allowed the macs to login with no expiry , or at worst , a 12 month expiry , in some cases like dublin this lasted maybe 6 weeks about a year ago , whereas the sv combo , ddigital duo and euro all got caught out when the UK server was busted in feb , as were the sv6 and sv7 as well , so quoting how it was is fine if you understand that you already had an expiry on the old support service , this new one is a different support service and has new rules of engagement , and doesnt include any boxes apart from sv6 and sv7 in the uk , so had you bought a euroview you may have had a few weeks at best before it failed completely

so they all had an expiry , even if you didnt know it , and being illegal you also ran the risk of the support service being busted , which it was , twice !

think of this as like a new company taking over the business of an old company , but without honouring any previous contracts and expecting customers to take out a new contract with an expiry date embedded into it , and taking the added risk of it failing or getting busted at a moments notice

Thanks again dude. I've gained some insight into how this all works. I sort of knew the risk involved as I was without channels like us all when the U.K server was raided, where I thought Starview was gone forever!!

Thankfully the police can concentrate on the more important jobs in the world and leave us happy in the country were it rains all the time and organisations like SKY run a monopoly market.
