To be traced you need your box to talk to the provider direct.

The box is only connected with the modem running rooter own ip address.

The mac address on the box is not traceable because the box mac address never change were ever is running.

Tools owned: Hammer, Chisel, Crowbar, Punch, Chainsaw, Cutter and Brain!!!

Did you know People will question all the good things they hear about you but believe all the bad without a second thought.

I think we'll only find out if people are going to get fined, when the server get's raided by the police. Unless of course the server is abroad.

Not quite true - there are other methods that can be used but its unlikely VM would use them just to catch somebody using a dodgy box. It all comes down to cost/returns and, at this time its simply not worth the cost of an engineer spending several hours pratting around for whats likely to end up being a ?50 fine in a magistrates court.

With the new equipment thats already been rolled out to most areas though, who knows when this situation may change. As soon as it becomes feasible to automate the detection then all bets are off.......

btw, for those still playing around with dodgy modems - it IS and always has been childsplay for VM to detect the location of a dodgy modem once it is identified as such. The difficult thing has always been the identification of such modems but even that is relatively simple using the new systems they now have in place in a lot of areas. Full network integration effectively places a death-sentence on cloned modems !
