    a few questions

I have a Starview Box Super(sv3 I think), and after all the messing around pre- Xmas by Virgin I never updated the firmware, but just updated the keycodes. My box has been working fine since 23/12/08 - the last key code change- but now it will not stay on for longer than a minute or so.After several switches on and off, and it re-booting itself every 30 seconds, it just stays on the Box Super start-up screen, and I cannot use the remote control or buttons on the box to change it, the only solution is to turn power off/on again.
    My questions are:
1)is it now time to update the firware, and is this the reason why my box is playing up.
2)My laptop has a 15 point female com port but the modem cable (and the box) is a 9 point one. What can I use to connect my laptop to my box?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to flash the new firmware 8.04 which you can find in the sticky download section.
To flash your box you will need a USB adaptor for one end of the 9 pin Cable.
You can get them on amazon or Maplins.
You will probably also need the usb drivers which again can be found in the download sections.
Let me know if you need any more info.

goto dpownloads .....click on firmware u need ..
Ensure you have the Right firmware for your box (make sure its not a clone box)

      Use GTrom to update downlown

      * You can leave it on default settings usually, (COM1/115200)
      * Click on BIN File and select the new firmware.
      * plug your box into the PC using null modem cable or adapters recommende by khenryashley on the thread above although i wouldnt reccomend maplins cas readin thro threads peeps have said the same!!
      * click on Download.
      * Wait till it says completed and your done. goto menu .goto menu. goto auto installion ..select your local cable provider eg ntl, cablewest etc then press auto scan..... wait till it scans.....
once you have flashed your box you need to turn on thre emu to access the dollar channels you do this by goin to menu pressin 1 5 7 0 on your remote which opens the secert menu .you then turn on the emu and then the default ,,exit 3 times to s** sports and it shud update wait till it reaches 100 then it shud be ok ,,,hope this helps bigfella you can check wat firmware is on ur box by goin to menu ..goto system setup then system information and it will tell u wat got

        Hi Bigfella
I didn't go into the detail of what he needed to do as he was not sure what box he had.
I was also not aware of the Maplins issue so cheers for the info.

Thanks for the info fellas, but what exactly is wrong with the cable from Maplins, as I can't wait a couple of days to order one from Amazon. Also Bigfella once I've downloaded the upgrade the bin file is greyed out, is this correct ?As you mention that I have to click on this and choose the download file.

Some people have had problems with the Maplins cable although I have used one ok.
First of all make sure you have the latest firmware on the box. Should be 8.04
You check this from the menu - System setup/System information
If you haven’t got 8.04 you can download from the sticky threads.
Plug you Box into your Pc and switch it on. Click on the 8.04 file .When gt rom appears select download.(usually com 1)
Once you have flashed the new firmware go into the menu and do a factory reset.
Rescan the box choosing your local cable provider.(N*L etc) Choose english-autoscan
Once the channels have saved, exit out 3 times.
Press menu and then 1570 you will go into another secret menu.
Highlight the default key and press ok.
Then scroll down to the emu and turn it on.
Exit out and put your box onto a S*y sp1
Wait for it to update. This may take a while.
You should be now all up and running.
              Cheers
              Ash
