    Help For Newbies

    Hi Guys, can I first start by saying what a fantastic site, and a great source of knowledge there is here!! I have three points which I wish to make;

    Firstly, there seems to be some confusion over cloned boxes. When my box stopped showing pay channels (and the Missus and kids went mad!!), I checked all the links in all the different forums to determine if mine was genuine or clone, inc the pics at Attack of the Clones |, counting the vents (clone has 18 x 7 vents and genuine has 25 x 7 vents, or 13 x 7 if 1st generation) and others, and although my box looks like the genuine one in the photo (but not identical) it has 20 x 8 slots! I have not seen any mention of this ratio of slots anywhere, yet the supplier assured me it was a genuine box, so I flashed it and hey presto, IT NOW WORKS FINE!! (Peace from Missus and kids!!)

    My second point is I read for weeks about how to flash it, and being not so PC savvy, getting more and more confused until I decided to give it a go, and couldn't believe how simple it was; I was reading threads about choosing ports and downloading drivers and god knows what else, but in the end, I realised most of it only related to connecting a USB adapter (if needed), and was of no importance to me. Just connect, download and done!!

    My third point is, to thank all the guys/help that is available on here. I donated ?5 to the cause, I think ?5 is a very small amount for all the information, help and resulting pleasure you guys give. Maybe it should be encouraged to donate if a person requires, and indeed gets, the help they so long for, I'm sure if they took their box to the local sat shop and he charged them ?5 every couple of months, they would be well pleased-here they can learn how to do it and gain some self satisfaction!

    Nice post. The counting of slots method was never really a clear way of defining genuine versus clone boxes. The best way was to look at the heatsink on the processor. If it was "spikey" in appearance it was usually a clone.

    Other tell tale sign was red blobs on the board screws. As said the grill count method was never 100%.
    I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams
