    RS232 Cable type (9 or 25 pin???)

Some of you may have seen me ask this question before in another post, though thought it would be best to start a new thread.

I'm having problems flashing my starview 2 box. I 1st bought a USB to RS232 which hasnt worked (followed all correct instructions, including installing driver and changing the USB port to COM3) I then thought I'd buy a RS232 (9 pin) to serial lead (25 pin) from Maplin hoping this would do the job. See link below:

Serial RS232 25 pin Male to 9 pin Female > Maplin

Have I made a mistake buying the 25 pin as the message keeps appearing on the screen flash failed? Could this be the reason for the flash failing? I have what looks to be a 9 pin port on the back of my desktop but wasnt sure if this was the correct port for transferring data. Still have the receipt so could change it for the following:

Serial RS232 9 pin Male to Female > Maplin

Have the gender changer too which was used on the original USB method. Any help would be greatly appreciated as been trying to sort for weeks now with little joy.

    Al

P.s. I am flashing the bin file: 'thebox_h20081222_457eE_api' (Version 4.57 taken from this site)

Looks like I'm doing everything right in practise, though people refer to a 9 pin serial cable so I'll give that a go and see what happens!

(Off to Maplin for the 3rd time in 3 days-)

Seems I'm using the right loader and BIN file too which is a start.

      Fingers crossed!

You have the wrong cable at the moment.
You need the rs232 9 pin female to female as the port on your desktop should be a male the same as the box
let me know if you need any more help.

            Thanks for the advice.

Just been and bought the 9 pin to 9 pin Serial cable (RS232)and tried the flash but still no joy! Message keeps saying 'Flash Update Fail'

According to Device Manager the communications port is set to COM1 which is what I've selected! Using Version 4.03 GT Rom and flashing the bin file 'thebox_h20081222_457eE_api' (Version 4.57 taken from this site)

Am I doing somehting wrong here?

            Please help!!!

I think you may have the wrong cable even now. You say you got a D9F to D9F serial RS232 lead, if thats the case and it says L68BT on the bag it came in then its a straight through cable.

You need a D9F to D9F "null modem" cable, which is a serial cross over cable, the part No. is L71BT. You have to give them the part number in most stores as generally they will give you the wrong cable.

box is now connection directly from box to PC via a 9 pin to 9 pin (Female-female) RS232 cable! Tried the forced flash but still the same 'Flash Update Fail.....' messge!

I've read a lot about this and dont think I'm doing anything wrong......using the correct software and cabels etc for SV2 - The box.

                    Any other ideas?

As per my post above have you checked to see if you have a straight through serial cable or the correct "null modem cable"?

your right Satsmo.....I have the L68BT. I'll try swopping the cable for the L71BT and hope that works.

Maplin will love me.....4 visits in 4 days (surely thats a record)

Sorry I did not mention in my earlier post that it should be a Null Modem cable.
