Support lifetime of a cable box?

Being new to cable (former S*y Digital viewer) I'm thinking of buying a Starview 4 box and was wondering, what sort of support lifetimes do these third party cable boxes have?

For those who have been with either the same box or with many boxes watching cable, how long can I expect to have this box before I am unable to get updates for it, based on past experience?

had my sv3 for 14 months, missed 2 days viewing in that time...ynwa

had my sv1 clone for a couple of years now,any problems i have had,which are minimal,have been fixed by the people of dk ,they are a great bunch in here,just go through some of the threads and find out.
