Returning SV4 to supplier 8882 error

I recently bought a SV4 from Selectronics Online, after downloading the software and using it for a week my box developed the well known 8882 error.

I contacted my supplier as suggested by many on here, and they simply replied to me with "you will need to j-tag".

I asked for a replacement or repair, which I got the response "you will be well aware that warranty will be void if any software different from the factory software is found".

If I return it, and they repair it, which I guess they would use the Max232 (or similar) will that delete any trace of the software?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks Lukeyboy

this is a common problem they send you a box and instructions to go to there site and download software and then if there is a problem they say warranty void if you changed it . did they send you info on how to flash if so i would contact them again with this info

They don't promote performing any software changes, and all I really need to know is can they trace if software has been added? As it is bricked and will need restoring with Max232 interface.

      Thanks

It looks pretty like it stores some of the information - I flashed mine and when it started up, it restarted on the same channel I had been watching (a non-FTA one) and I didn't have to rescan for any of the channels. It also stored the Favourites groups that I had setup.

The chap at Selectronics is a real charmer isn't he?

Ah you have expierienced the charm! 2nd to none service...... not.

So looks like it will still have the firmware visible, thinking of using Max232, and asking for replacement if it persists! Are you still having trouble after using the interface?

          Thanks Lukeyboy

            Lukeyboy,

Got the box flashed the first time with the firmware supplied by TMC with the interface - it looked OK, but then started turning itself on and off. Reflashed with the version from the download section and it was nice and happy until I inserted a USB stick!! Reflashed again and haven't touched it since then and it appears to be pretty stable. Will let you know if I have any more problems.

            Cheers,

1.07 - used the software that came on the CD from TMC (the EXE file), copied the 1.07 BIN file (copied from the downloads section) onto the laptop that I was using, connected it all up (bit of fiddling with the plugs cos the JTag socket was different from the lead) and flashed it from there.

                Cheers,

Thanks Spacerat, do I need any other cables other than what is provided, if I use max232 bought from TMC? You have been helpful enough, but could you type a quick how to guide?

You need a null modem cable along with the Max232 interface and if your pc/laptop does not have a 9 way serial port you need a USB adapter or a PCI card also.

                    The method is as below:

Use loader GTROM-V25 loader (see link below) and firmware bin file 1.07 (for UK) been the latest you will find here Digital Kaos - Downloads - The Box Super USB V1.07

                    1. Connect RS232 Null Modem cable between PC & Max 232 Adaptor.
                    2. Open the lid of your sv4 and look directly behind the USB you will see a 4 Pin connector. Looking at this from front view pin 1 = vcc+ Pin2 =TX Pin 3 = RX Pin 4= Ground.
                    3. Using your max232 Adaptor connect the Wires to corresponding pins Vcc to vcc Tx to Tx Rx to Rx Ground To Ground.
                    4. Select Serial port COM 1 Etc Baud Rate Fixed As 115200.
                    5. Browse the BIN file to download and select File Type (Application Only using the SV4 firmware bin file).
                    6. Click "DOWNLOAD" first and turn the receiver power OFF/ON to download.
                    7. After download completed ,wait another 30 seconds more until rebooting finished.
                    8. If an error appears try again or follow the solution displayed.

                    GTROM V25 Loader:

                    Code:

                      Lukeyboy,

There is actually a really good readme file comes on the disk. The only things that you will need are:
                      1. Max232 cable
                      2. PC with serial port (9pin male) or USB to 9 pin serial adapter
                      3. 9 pin Female - 9 pin Female Null modem cable
                      4. BIN file downloaded from downloads section
                      5. Philips screwdriver to get the back off the box

Plug the Null modem cable into the back of the PC (or the USB adapter) plug the other end into the TMC adapter. Plug the TMC cable into the JTag port (the one beside the USB port) and then follow the instructions that are on the CD. Just make sure that you have the port settings correct for the Comm port (Start -> Control Panel -> (Classic View) System -> Hardware -> Device Manager. Open the Ports (COM & LPT), find the one you are looking for, double-click, Port Settings and make sure the speed is set to 115,200).

                      Any problems, just ask.

                      Cheers,
                      Spacerat

Bit at a loss here guys!

Bought the Max232 adapter from TMC, turned out the plastic connection of the adapter that connects to SV4 does not fit.

Tried trimming it down with a stanley knife, and eventually got it to reboot using the advice above and only forcing the plastic connection into the box , worked fine for 1 1/2 days then it returned to 8882.

And now using the same process it is a real struggle to reboot, and when I can it gets so far and soon as I do an automatic scan it returns to 8882.

I'm really not sure how my supplier can prove I have the non-fta software if the Max232 does not work cure the problem.

                          Any ideas guys????

If you flash it with the origonal free to air bin file they cant tell the difference.
Its version 1.02 which brings your box back to origonal settings
