usb adapters give a lot of grief to some people, can you get access to a computer with the rs232 port as its much simpler.
also did you try a different com portComment

tried different com port and usb keeps failing when gets to 100% tried 4.54 4.55 4.57 any ideas?Comment

just unticked box and tried loading 4.54 on to box got to 100% and said flash update failed i think the box is just fcked i really dont havea clue nowComment

I take it you only have the null modem/usb adapter and power cables connected to your box
and you are only ticking the app file only box in the gtrom loader
in the advanced port settings you could try reducing the settings on receive and transmit buffers
you could try to see if you can successfully load an early firmware like 400eE you would need gtrom 4.0 (if you get an earlier one to load you could build up from there)
but most of all go to someones desktop where you can try without the USB adapter which is most likely the problem.Comment
