The other thing to watch out for is that the clone boxes have a different connector for the Max232 - the one supplied by TMC doesn't clip straight in as there is a plastic skirt round the socket. It can be used, but it will need a stanley knife and a bit of patience.
thanks Spacerat... good advice there on the max232.
I was wondering if anyone who has any experience in both clone and real could tell us the difference between the two from a reliability / usability view?
I mean to say... if someone has a clone, is it the end of the world? can they still get by with it or should the replace it immediately with a real one?
If the keyroll or encryption method is changed in the UK, then you will need to update the firmware. As you can see new firmware will brick a clone and so you cannot use updated firmware.
Reliability of a clone versus a genuine model is usually down to component level. The clone models are made from inferior components and are more prone to failure over time. However I have seen clones last longer than their genuine counterparts so I may be contradicting myself.
Regards usability there should be no difference between the two. Other than what I said regards present/future updates.
as always a fountain of knowledge this dude knows his stuff!
Just looked at the DVBmonkeyUK site and it looks really good... good prices too...
An update on my FIS situation... the guy was on holiday but will be back on 29th, i did manage to catch him on the phone after trying for a good week and he said he would change the box over for a new one... i haven't mentioned that i know its a clone yet..thought i'd wait till im there and then ask him about it just incase he disappears...but so far all signs are good!
Thanks to everyone for your help.I have just received the max 232 interface from taylor made and just like someone said I had to 'trim' it with a stanley knife until it fitted, that said there were no instructions or disc with it so I would be grateful if anyone can tell me what the next step is..thanks in advance.

hate to be a drag but when using the gtrom loader nothing is happening.I can't use a null modem cable as the max 232 interface has a female connection and have that plugged into the back of my computer any further advice would be appreciated, cheers.
Thank you for the advice but I give up on this now...I have tried a starview usb/pansat fix max 232 and a max 232 interface both supplied by taylor made cicuits and tried all com ports and many other combinations but the box is still dead so I have to concede that it's my fault for buying shite off ebay, cheers.
