Starview 4 ... USB Hard Drive.

Hi all, today i recieved my starview 4 box from dvbjunkies, top quality service with them, must admit that.

What i want to know is what external drive must i purchase? just a standard USB External Hard Drive, Or USB External Portable Drive, Must it have its own power supply?. what size can i get? will only certain brand drives work with starview or do they all work?

    thanks in advance

BUY THE Western Digital 320GB Passport Essential ONLINE AT PC WORLD.

will be ok? or would it be even better to find one with its own power supply?

ok im still a bit confused on which to go for, you have them WD passport drives at ?55, but near me they have maxtor 500gb with own power supply for same price. would i be better off to get bigger one? or is 320 plenty for films and soaps etc..?

Depends on how much you like films. I find 320GB to be more than enough, with a movie averaging out at 3GB, thats quite a few films or what ever else you would like to keep. Plus the Maxtor isn't the best.

ok mate will take your word for it and stick with the Western Digital. i should format it when i get it? to FAT32 correct? whats the best application to use to do this. Also with the starview 4, how does recording work... say if i press pause on the remote will it automatically start recording to the hdd? and also if i just press the record button on remote?. Is it possible to schedule recording on different channels? or say for arguments sake, if i wanted to record a a film lets say on channel 1234, which started at 8pm, and then wanted to record another film on 1233, starting at 11pm, will it automatically switch channels or must i select channel i wish to record on then switch over manually? thanks in advance for your advise

Most questions I have seen in one paragraph

Yes you need to format it to FAT32 you can use swissknife or a small HP application which I have used. The recording feature works best with the 1.07 firmware revision and I hope you are therefore in the UK.

So the answers to recordings are based on 1.07 as 1.09,1.10 and Beta do not have an EPG record facility. Yes it will record to HDD when you press record, that facility is called timeshift. Timed recordings as said are dependent on where you are.

hi again, i tried a hard drive only a small one that i had a lend of 60gb, i formatted to fat32 in windows and also formatted using starview formatting application but i get invalid drive after it formats. even though i get invalid drive im still able to record. but if i unplug the usb drive and plug back in then it says it must be formatted. Also since i plugged it in i get a line flicking through the screen, can mainly see it when screen is black, scart is in fine. Do you think it could be the power of the usb? if so ill be buying a hdd with own power supply. thanks in advance
