    Starview 4 won't reset 8882 error

I've bought a Starview 4 and bricked it afer a firmware update. I've bought the RS232 gizmo and have a RS232 Null Modem Cable. Followed all the instructions, connected the gizmo, ran the GTrom selected Com1 (112500) and switched it on. Then NOTHING, no download no reaction at all. The only thing was that the RS232 device got very hot. Can anyone shed some light on what I am doing wrong.

I think he is talking about the Max232 which is a serial RS232 interface.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams

        Hi,

Yes the assumption that it's a Max232 which is a serial RS232 interface is correct.

Pretty sure the com port should be set to 9600 bps NOT 112500. Try that and see how you get on.

              Re-8882 error

The baudrate should be set to 115200.l have recoverered a sv4 from the dreaded 8882 error, but not straight away, because the max232 interface wasn't available until about three months after l bricked it in mid december of 2008.l had plenty of time in the period in between to experiment, trying to find a cure.l have a laptop which has no rs232 serial ports.l bought a nikkai usb to 9 pin serial adaptor, which had a test programme to send data out of one rs232 port through the adapter, null modem cable and back through another adapter to another usb port. lf l had serial ports l would not have needed usb to serial converters, just the test programme, which displays a tick if data has transfered successfully and a null modem cable.l got the adaptor from maplins,l think the one in latest catalogue code 2p43w page 885 is the same one.with this you could check whether the max232 is working with the same test.

                Thanks.

My problem here is that after following all the instructions and clicking download nothing happens, no errors, no progress, nothing.

I'll try another laptop but I expect the same to happen.

For the record I am using GTROM_TheBoxSuperUSB and software TheboxSuperUSB_V1.07.

I am at the point of frustration as I appear to be running out of options.

                Can any one help

I've just done some checks on the RS232 Null Modem cable and I'm beginning to wonder if the cable isn't a crossover despite my local comp shop selling it as if it is. I've done some checks with a DC Circuit test but it's difficult to get a strong reading on pins 2, 3 and 5. But on thw surface of it it could be the problem.

                    Any Thoughts?

Just checked and the crossover si 2 to 3 and 3 to 2 with 5 straight through.

Do you know when you run GTrom and click download the download process splash screen comes up switch on the box or after. An odd question but could be the problem.

when i solved my 8882 problem i couldn't get it to work from my pc and had to use a pal's laptop.

try testing the port with another device before continuing following the instructions with the gt-rom loader you must set it up then turn the starview off and on to initiate the transfrer.

                            hope this helps Good Luck
