Starview The Box Super USB - 8882 Bricked?

    Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help me out with this. I have a Starview "The Box Super USB". I tried to flash the box with v1.12 firmware, and found on reboot it displays 8882 and simply does nothing.

I have gone through the forums. However nothing specific to the Box Super USB is around.

    So to clarify:

There is NO Null Modem cable required as The Box Super USB does not have a Null Modem Connection.

I have opened the Box to find the Max232 chip but haven't been able to.

Is there anyone smart enough to help me out with this?

    Really would appreciate sensible replies.

    Thanks,
    Z

      Hi Maca

Thanks for the reply, At the moment I have no way to apply the firmware you've suggested. The reason for that is as soon as I power on the box, after a few seconds displays 8882 on the front panel. The is absoluteley no display on the TV.

Your help and thoughts would be great if you can help out.

      Thanks again,
      Z

        Hi Again

        Hey Maca,

I have just looked at the links you provided, excuse my hastiness in my reply (over eager). The links you sent seem very useful. I'll definately try it out and keep you posted on how things go.

Do you by any chance know the best place to purchase a portable RS232 connector like in the picture? I was going to give maplins a go, unless you know of anywhere better?

        Thanks again for your help!

        Z

            Hey

            Hey Maca,

Thanks for the quick reply, I did pop into maplins but the guy told me they don't do them. He did have the components to make my own but said I would need to find out what IC was on the board (shown in the picture which was part of the zip file).

If you have a maplins part number that would be good, I also checked flea bay managed to find what I want but the shipping is from China!!

            Any thoughts?

Hello I also bicked my box as it was turning itself on and off quite often. Could this be a software issue or something more serious? Whilst I was downloading software to the box it decided to turn itself off and 8882 message is as fas as I get. Anyone help? Also I am looking to get a new box and not really happy with the box super usb. Anyone recommend a different box please? Thanks.

                      Hi Johnny

I would give this fix a go, I think it might work for you. Maca has been a great help on this providing guidance and advice. I am waiting for my cable to arrive, so hopefully once I try this I can give you feedback on how it all went. I'm hoping it fix's my issue.

As for your query about another box. I recently purchased a Eurovox 5100 PVR which I updated using the guides and f/w on this site, it's up and running and works perfectly.

I'm pretty new to this so not sure which is the best box out there, but the Eurovox 5100 PVR works great for me and has the facility to record etc (as long as you put a 2.5" IDE Laptop drive, I think the max size the box will work with is 120Gb).

Maybe others can provide better advice, have a look through the forums I'm sure there are some threads on this already.

                      Regards,
                      Z

                        Thanks Z

I will try and get a cabe and try the fix. This box has been nothing but trouble since day 1. Is your box a Thebox super USB? If you have the same box have you got a part number fot the cable?

                        Cheers

                        Johnnyboy

                          Hi Johnny

Yes, My Box is "The Box Super USB" to be honest mine has been fine so far, I tried an f/w upgrade and once it rebooted I got the 8882 error.

You can do a google search for jtags4all go to the first link on google .co.uk on that website you will see a picture with the text "RS323 Starview4" click on it it has information about the cable and a link to purchase it through paypal.

                          You will also need:

                          1 x Null Modem cable
                          1 x Laptop/PC with a 9-Pin serial Port

                          Hope this helps.

                          regards,
                          Z

tailor made circuits is the way to go sorted mine.
there is a fitting inside the box for a nullmodem connection socket.
i still have mine if you live local to notts

                              Hi Maca

Just a quick question with regards to the firmware upload. On the links you stated in your original post. One of the BIN files was "TheboxSuperUSB2_v2.03.20090923.BIN" Also in the 8882 Zip file there are BIN files the latest being "TheboxSuperUSB_V1.07.BIN". I'm assuming the latest firmware is "TheboxSuperUSB2_v2.03.20090923.BIN" so I should apply that instead of "TheboxSuperUSB_V1.07.BIN".

                              Is that correct?

Sorry for the stupid question, just want to make sure I get this right!

                              Thanks again,
                              Z
