starview hd combo help on cable

hi i have a starview hd combo and i lost my channels off cable when n3 came out. iv been told that i can get all channels if i connect my cable in2 the back of my box then connect this up to my internet. dose any one know if this is true and what i need to do this. also i would like to know if vm can trace the fact i am using a non gen vm box due to it been connected to internet. i dont have a sky dish so i cant try to recive programs using it as a sat box. any help would be good
