Whats a mackem??
I worked with Sunderland lads they call themselves mackems but dont know what it means.
I think its some derogatory geordie term about ships, you mack em (make them) an we'l tak em

Both are correct.
During the days of the shipyards in the North East, ships were built on the Wear then the ships were sailed to the Tyne to be fitted out.
Sunderland folk do speak as you say, they say 'mak' instead of make and 'tak' instead of take.
Hence the saying " we mak em and you tak em" we make the ships and you take them.
So Sunderland people are know as Mackems and Tackems or shorted to Mackems.
And I do not believe for one moment that anyone from Sunderland does not know why they are called Mackems, maybe they are Geordies who are wannabe MackemsComment
