    Eating Out of Date Food

I have had some sausage butties for my dinner, knowing that they were 4 day past there use by date,
they were fresh, and had been in the fridge all the time since we bought them,
my other half is convinced I am going to get food poisoning, but I think a lot of these best before/use by dates are way too cautious,
I believe as long as you cook the food properly there shouldn't be any problem,
does anybody else eat out of date food, or know someone who has eaten it and got food poisoning
I know I'll continue eating it, because I'm sick of throwing good food away.

Often eat food past the 'use by date'.

Supermarkets will always select a 'use by date', well within....

So long as beef etc... has been stored in a fridge, I reckon you'll always be OK ...4 days or so..

But the most important test.... is smell, you're not long in knowing if food is off... by the smell, or by a lesser extent by it's appearance...

Remember watching a documentary... about folks who took food out of a supermarket skip... and were OK..

I've eaten stuff that would make even the most ardent lead belly puke.

I've found that the only real worry with use by and sell by dates is seafood, don't dabble with that, trust me on this one. Shellfish is by far the worst, laid up 3 days with the dry heaves whilst shitting myself as my body rejected some dodgy scallops.

My eyes and nose are my gauges when it comes to food, if it looks and smells all right then I'll eat it regardless of some arbitrary number.

If things are rancid you can see it and smell it, if you miss the green fur and three day corpse in the baking sun smell off your steak then you can definitely taste the bacteria before you swallow.

You could call mate, I would make you a company Don't worry buddy. Nothing is not gonna happen to you. Drink some bear to digest better For that kind of things I don't mind at all when they are few days out of date I only look at milk products, they can be tricky ones

when i was a bin man we were trade not homes and all our bins were shops ect

i used to take all sorts of stuff home mainly sweets and crisps for the kids (they were all unopened multipacks) and there was nothing wrong with them at all also there was lots of fruit and veg and which although was all ok i never touched

apart from once i took 2 bin bags home full of bannana's that were still green and give them to family and neighbours

i also used to get trays and trays of cans stella carling you name it sometimes out of date sometimes 1 can had burst

do you remember a couple of year back cadburies had a problem and recalled all their chocolate?

we got boxes and boxes everyone i knew had a house full of cadburies chocolate dairy milk, fruit and nut, caramels the lot they were all untouched in boxes of 30's and nobody died either

there is a bit of stigma about it but i never had a problem and i never took anything dirty the only thing i ever took was stuff that was put from shop floor straight into a bin bag there were no other contaminents or dirt and everything was always ok

you cant eat it but we also used to get loads of washing powder too where the boxes had been burst we just used to empty all the contents into bags

            those were the days

i have some eggs now in the fridge that are 5 days out of date i might eat them sometime this week they will be ok if i eat them next month

you can test eggs if they float there bad if the sink they are ok although i am sure i seen shaun ryder eat one that was left to go off and it was supposed to be a delicacy

he said it was ok too

Apparently the eggs sinking in water does not work if you keep your eggs in the fridge.

ahh is that so or is it because they are ok to eat from fridge ?

eggs have always been ok for me regardless you buy them off the shelf the best before is for on the shelf surely they last longer in fridge anyway?

sell by dates and best before just cover the makers butts.

if you buy something that has 1 week sell by it will probably last double it if it is wrapped up and in fridge if not more

some people have it in their heads they will die if they eat a slice of meat that is 2 days out of date in fridge

yet you can go to spain and they have the ~~~~er hung up outside all over thats is weeks if not months old

and they are not all dead either

                        that is a good point,

how come a fresh sausage only lasts a few days, when they can hang ham or beef joints for like 12 weeks?

how come the sausage goes out of date and the expensive meat joint matures?

i dont bother too much with dates,
if it looks ok, smells ok and cook right through it should be ok....

well I'm still alive, no Montezuma's revenge, no gippy tummy,
but the other half is still convinced I shouldn't eat out of date food,
I've tried getting it through to her, by asking what did people do before prepacked food and fridges, but she wont have it,
but then again, the way she goes through shoes, I'm sure she thinks they also have best before dates on,
anyhow, I'll carry on eating food slightly past there date, I wonder what the true best before really is, I reckon, on best before you could add another month (except bread),
and I reckon on, use by, you could add another week (except fish)

When I were a lad (in my first few flats) we used to go into the local bakers yard and raid their vans and skips.

Drivers used to have wee cubby holes to put some good stuff for themselves which we found (vans back doors were never locked) and the skips were full of out of date stuff which never killed me yet.

Security has gotten better in these places over the years so not able to cut my shopping bill that way anymore
