Anyone have that new BT infinity fibre optic broadband?

As above does anyone have it? I've just signed up and it says my download speed will be about 37.2meg. Just wondering if the speed is as fast as they quote?

Not getting it fitted till the 19th may though

    not my review, someone elses:

I was excited to hear back in October that BT Infinity was available in my area and promptly signed up for an install at the beginning of December. I nearly cancelled my order though in the first week after I found out that the unlimited data cap was actually a 300gb data cap. My main reason for wanting Infinity was to enable me to download large data packets from work overnight. In the end I thought I'd give BT a shot.

To be honest, I kind of wish I hadn't. While it can certainly be fast (most weekday mornings I can get 36+ mbit speeds), it is a thousand times less reliable than Be broadband before. In the past week or two it's been unusable to stream BBC iPlayer videos in the evening and the speed will randomly drop to paltry speeds in the early hours of the morning (12am to 3am etc) - as in it'll go down to 0.5 mbit or even lower and my ping rates will go up to 500-2000 milliseconds.

I'm not too worried (yet) about the major speed drops to unusable levels since I think that must be a glitch with BT (admittedly one that is very hard to report). The thing that really annoys me though is the false advertising that BT puts out in terms of peak hour speeds. They put out plenty of adverts on TV saying that their broadband doesn't slow down in the evenings unlike all the other providers - "the whole world's online" type adverts. This is completely opposite to the truth though. I've been with several internet suppliers now. Eclipse internet, UK Online (glad I left them), Be broadband. I didn't *ever* notice any deterioration in line speed with any of them. Broadband speeds were very constant with them all - Be gave me a solid 14 mbit day or night come rain or shine. BT on the other hand often drops down from 37 mbit to 4 in the evenings and recently down even further than that. That's false advertisement in my mind.

I thought about infinity but i download way over 300gb a month so it would be useless for me. Just letting you know what your in for

As long as it delivers over 30meg I'll be happy and tbh I would never download more than 300gb a month so not really too bothered about the cap

Is it not like the standard bt broadband- it only works fast if you are close to the exchange.

They lie to sign you up, told me id get 58. I constantly get thrown off and they say it's network errors. Im close to the exchange and only get 16 meg. the engineers dont even understand it yet themselves, and I've had 4 visit me

You release that distance to exchange has no effect on the speed with infinity ?

No it doesnt really matter (well insignificantly so unless low latency is your end goal as opposed to throughput) Distance from the cab box however does matter, as does the quality of the drop cable. your looking at 50Meg tops anyway on ideal conditions ie: under 300m from your nearest cab, anything 300metre and above sees a drastic quality drop because of the physics involved with attenuation at high frequencies.
To go any higher you need to use coax (this will net you 80meg on the DMT G.993.2 protocol) but BT insist on uning the same old twisted pair (sometimes not even twisted but old 70s flat pair) getting Openreach to replace a drop cable is a long hard uphill and costly struggle, one ive tried to fight in the past (couldnt get voice coms via the plain old phone network due to a shagged drop cable but the engineers where having none of it) so even with infinity your stranded at 50mb with prime conditions.

To get any higher than that you need to jump to FTTH instead of FTTC but the expense involved with running fibre into individual homes is something BT would very much like to avoid.

The only other option is dropping from the Discreet Multi-Tone Modulation (DMT) and going DOCSIS with cable DOCSIS 3.0 testing is set to begin with Virgin, offering 1.5Gig down and 150Meg up
Even rolling out FTTH BT will still be playing catchup

Thanks Chroma. I am aware that distance to cabinet has a part to play as does quality of cable between cabinet and house. I was speaking to my cousin who is a BT engineer rolling out infinity at the moment. They are having issues that in some places even with the cabinet in the street, the quality of the twisted pair to the house has been causing issues. Don't forget that some of their cabling stretches back to pre-WWII era so at least 70 years old.

FTTH is not going to happen in this country any time soon but tbh as I mentioned in another thread, I don't think this country is ready for high speed bb yet.
