we had the ferguson or something VERY similar (probably baird) and it was remote controlled. the remote had two buttons. channel up and sound.
if you was watching bbc2 and wanted to turn over to bbc1 you had to flick through itv1 itv2 5 and 6 .
to turn up the volume u could use the remote.. down had to be on the set and when u pressed the sound button on remote it emitted a high pitch squeal..

aah yes, the baird. with the panel underneath the channel button that would spring out when you pressed it in to reveal a series of dials which, looking back, were probably for fine-tuning.

and not forgetting the video player with remote that was connected to the video with a wire. very fancy schmancy and la-di-da

unconfirmed rumor but beleived to be genuine

                1) the bulb between the tape heads, if that blow didn't work
                2) that wires remote has rf in it, of if you had it near of one of them mains tester, you though it had mains down it

That type of teletext hasn't gone away. I recently castigated RTE for their teletext system which if you want to look at page 132 the counter started at 133 and you had/have to wait till it gets its finger out and clocks every other page on its way back to 132.
I drew to their attention the super fast teletext on european channels and am still waiting a reply. RTE= Really Tedious Entertainment.

Our PYE set also had that pop-out tuner section.

Ours also had the high frequency audio remote (I can't remember the proper name for it), ours also had only 2 buttons for channel up and down. It was a bit quirky as we could change the channel using our voices or even by using money.

                          I'll explain......

If we dropped coins and they 'jingled' then somewhere in that 'jingle' was the same frequency for the TV to go up a channel

Also, if we used our voice and made a loud "Shhhh" or "Chaaa" noise the tv would do the same.
