    A Little reminder

Just to warn everyone with a UK photo driving licence that their photo driving licences are only valid for 10 years

As well as invalidating their driving licence, drivers who fail to renew their photo can be prosecuted for failing to surrender the old licence and supply a photo. If convicted, drivers face a ?1,000 fine.

The DVLA will send out a reminder to every licence holder but many drivers have changed address without informing the authorities, which is an offence.

Of course, needless to say, the DVLA are charging for this pleasure

    The fee of ?20.00

There will be a fee of ?4.50 in addition to the renewal fee for using the Post Office? service.

Its due for renewal on the date shown at 4b on the face of the licence

From chat on other forums, no. There were loads of people who only updated after getting a producer and just had a verbal warning. Looks like DVLA are not cracking down on it and its not a points offence or invalidate your insurance by the looks.

Mate of mine got stopped, when they found his picture had expired 2 weeks back they said his license had now been revoked and impounded his car, he said I can get my wife to collect the car as she is a named diver on my insurance, they then rang his insurance company and told them the policy holder was driving with a revoked license who then cancelled the policy on the spot.
He now has to wait up to 4 weeks for his license to be updated and then re insure before he can collect the car, he asked if someone else that has insurance to drive other vehicles could collect it and was told no the car itself needed to have insurance on it.
Now its incurring daily storage charges as well as the towing fee

Did a quick search and came up with this,

What Happens if My Driving Licence Has Expired? - Your Driving Licence

Up to ?1,000 fine potentially and I am guessing that it invalidates your insurance. Also if has expired more then 2 years ago you could potentially have to retake your driving test which I imagine would include theory test if you have not done one.

Just got to say... the government are a bunch of scammers. Maybe they should join the bad garage scheme also. They've got a cheek criticising any other rouge trading practices that go on. Don't motorists give them enough money... in road tax / fuel duty /MOT's/ insurance tax... the list goes on but still want to charge ?20 to renew a licence.

                  @dik
Try to put myself in your friends's situation. One idea would be to sell the car to a motor trader friend 'just on paper' Ask them to collect the car, and as they would be the new owner, I imagine it would be illegal for the pound to 'deny use of vehicle'. (In saying that the government are a tough lot to take on...) That way.. you'd save on storage charges at least.

You don't have a photo licence then?

It would also be worth photocopying both the photo and green paper parts. There have been stories of people losing entitlements, especially for motorcycles, on renewal and DVLA then ask for proof that you passed... like anyone keeps the certs. Worth the photocopy and getting someone to verify and sign it before you send it if you ask me
My master plan is to live forever..... going to plan so far
Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.
