ISO is the films sensitivity to light.
the lower the number the longer the film needs to be exposed to light in order to "etch" a picture.

Struggling here not to go into science mode and use big words and confusing formulas.

Whilst this sounds all hunky dory, and you'll be thinking cranking the iso up to something absurd and reducing the shutter speed would be great for action shots that don't blur the caveat is that the higher the film speed the greater the granularity and noise becomes.

Its about finding the sweet spot really, and this falls back to external conditions like whats going on in a scene, light amount, quality of optics/filters and the like.

Hope this makes some kind of seense to you, or at least more so than f?/exposure time = (Average Luminance x ISO)/Reflected light...

Best way with photography is to kinda know the basic formulas, and then get down to your own experimentation, its digital so theres no film cost drawback nowadays to go out and shoot as much as you can and find what works best for you
He who laughs last thinks slowest.
