fethiye, turkey...............

looks like i'm off for a jolly jape to fethiye in turkey. i have never been either before. anyone been to fethiye and can give some helpful advice. or just general advice about turkey would also be apprecited.

please, no 'its a bigger bird than a pigeon'. or 'you eat it at christmas', type replys please

It's ok Mick, I'm in Dalyan at the moment but went there a couple of years ago. Beer about 4tl a pint and we are gettint 2.6tl to the pound at the moment, food always nice, 2 meals plus 4 pints about ?30, you will not be far away from Patara beach,7th most beautiful beach in the world well worht a day out, boat trips are good value, about ?15 for a day out will all the food thrown in. If you go to the market haggle like ~~~~ they expect it. The Turks like the Brits and hate the German so you are on a winner straight away. Take cash it's safe and change your money at the Post office, you will loose a lot if you take travellers cheques, also take some good suntan cream, even the best of sunworshippers burn over here...

should i pack light and buy my tshirts, shorts, and flip flops in Turkey as they will be cheaper, or get them from Asda afore i go?

been to turkey twice
loved it,went to olu deniz first time was amazing went paragliding of the highest point to paraglide from in europe,,its not far from fethiye well worth a day out,plenty of nightlife,bars and restaurants in nearby hisaranou ,,very scenic
while we were on the beach one day a guy was touting for business for his fish restaurant nestled in the hills in fethiye,,thought we would give it a try,got picked up from hotel in olu deniz driven there and dropped back,,the place was beautiful,lovely view and the food was first class very reasonably priced etc
turkish people were some if the friendliest ive ever met on a holiday,,would reccomend turkey for a holiday to everybody

i love turkey granted they are all after one thing cash

but they cant do enough for you you can have a really good laugh with ,ost of them they are very friendly and good humoured

downside too turkey is hassle hassle hassle when you go out you find yourself promising 20 restraunts you will come in for a meal and then have too hide they remember ~~~~in everything about you

also watch in the markets you can get good quality fake armani, ralph lauren t shirts but when you are haggling the can try to slip shit quality t shirts in bag which you dont notice till you have gone away

i was lucky i noticed i got 5 good quality polo t shirts for 50TL which is about ?20

i only had 100 TL note he tried to rob my change first after i pulled him up on that and got it i walked away and caught the wife up who was further along

i then found he had only put 4 t shirts in the bag not 5 so i went back rather pi55ed off to get the other which he didnt look happy about

and off i went again and when i caught the wife up i told other i got the other one by chance she asked to look

the robbing ~~~~er had put the cheaper grade t shirts in not the ones we had agreed on i was ~~~~in fuming so i went back again

the cheeky ~~~~er wanted more cash at this point i was ~~~~in bouncing and started getting angry and pushy and shouty and demanded all my ~~~~in money back at this point another man i belive the store owner came over and tried to calm me down he shouted at the man who served me and i got the tops i wanted

Do not be put off they do not want a scene just remember to check whatver you buy and remember everything is fake

as for place i have been too dalyan mud baths which is a good day and pretty close pammukale is nice but a lot of travel i found ephesus a bit boring and a long day the jeep safari was a good laugh but be prepared to get we as you normally have water pistols against the other jeeps

i just got back from altinkum which is on the other side drinks were about 4TL a pint but we found one that was 3TL

food in turkey is always excellent most restraunts do the same food a rough guide for a decent meal is about 20TL nice set meals for 2 are leg of lamb and chateu briann which will cost you about 70TL for 2 if you go in though haggle before you sit down most will offer free drink or bottle of wine if you push

cheapest full english was about 8TL be aware that if you get any much cheaper you will not be getting proper bacon or sausage or maybe just 1 of each


i used to say a guie to haggle was half it but i have found they are wise to this and sometimes i found i could get it for less than quarter

trick now is if you see something you like stick to a price that you think is fair and walk away chance are they will chase you and you will win if not and its something you raelly want walk away if they dont chase make sure you walk by again and haggle again

I agree with thered ,used to be a fairly nice place but now all they want is your money and take the pi. Watch out if you take a boat trip they bring a few mates and drink beers all day and then try to get all trippers to pay for them food only is included in price.Have a nice time.

bit off topic but sunny beach bulgaria is a good spot to head to as well
was three 3 years ago a beer was 2 lev works out at just over a euro and ya could get 2 cocktails for less than 4 euro
heading back there this year
food was good and reasobaly priced
and a serious beach there was the biggest beach ive ever seen

on a differnet note i went out of town on a jeep safari what was that 5hit it was a great day out and we went to a village i got 2 beers wife got 4 bottles of coka cola for her and kids then they all got crisps and sweets

price for the lot was 1 lev which worked out at the time about 40p

put me off paying the resort prices which worked ot about a 80p a beer cos im a greedy ~~~~er

I went to Fethiye a good few year ago, good base really, reasonable sized town for buying all your nik naks, and plenty of beers holes to drink beer in.
Olu Deniz is a short moped ride away, and is beautiful, the blue Lagoon up there. better than Fethiye for the swiiming/bathing.
First time I went, I bought a leather jacket from there, for 2 million lira... went the next year, and 2 million about bought a beer. Think the money has probably stabilised a bit now, and they knocked all the noughts off the end.
