I know this unit and I know the staff, I also know the crap they have to put up with.
this guy may have had a history of being violent when drunk, the staff have a duty of care to all there patients not just one,
and I'm sure the reason he wasn't let in is to safeguard the other patients,
Anti-psychotic drugs and alcohol do not mix well, they will make a mentally ill person very psychotic and violent, this is why the unit had a strict "no alcohol/drugs" policy, which I'm sure he knew about.
I don't think most people are aware of how many times mental health staff get assaulted, it's almost daily, so there not going to let someone in, who is going to disrupt a whole hospital unit,
if he was that unwell, why didn't he go to A & E,
and one last thing, if the staff had let him in, he would have probably still died,
he was not on a section, he was a voluntary patient, and therefore would have not been put on close observations, just every few hours, so would probably still be dead. and it's all well and good the parents now showing concern, but where have THEY been for the past few of years.

I saw a documentary a few months back showing a Paramedic doing his rounds on a Motorcycle. He was called to a canal footpath as someone had reported seeing a body. He had a pretty good idea it would be some Junkie that had over done it. Sure enough it was, but unfortunately this one wasn't dead.

He administered some drug that brings them around almost instantly and he was saying how sometimes the Junkies get well pissed off as he'd just wasted their trip. This one wasn't a happy bunny and even more so as he knew it would be a few hours before the next load of drugs he was going to take would get him high. He said he sometimes gets attacked when they come around but he's used to it. WTF.
