Coriolis Effect........ Never again.

Been playing Call of Duty 4 (again) & started to get really pissed off with the sniper shot using the .50cal Barrett M82

In the advice given by the SAS Captain leading the mission it mentions adjusting for wind, temperature, humidity & the coriolis effect. Now I knew this was the relation between the rotation of the earth on a body in flight between two points...but not how to correctly calculate the adjustment.

I've been enjoying some quiet time, so started to look it up on the tinterweb... Now I need pain killers for my head.

Wind, temperature, humidity, inertia from the weight of the bullet spinning in flight causing the shot the spiral into an increasing cone shape, direction of shot (N, S, E, W), latitue, Northern or Southern hemisphere....... AAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH My head!

The list seems endless. Can anyone honestly say they understand all of this, and can then apply it correctly. It took me about 8 attempts at that ~~~~er before I got him. Previously it was about 3 shots before I got his head.

Basically, it relates to the spin of the earth. If you're firing north, the earth will rotate eastward, which in effect means your bullet (while in the air) will move westward relative to your target.
so, if firing north, aim a little to the east of the target.
if firing south, aim a little to the west of the target.
if firing east, aim a little lower
if firing west, aim a little higher

strength and direction of the wind will have an effect also and the right amount of wind blowing from the west may cancel out the coriolis effect.

but, in essence, its always gonna be trial and error. no matter how realistic they try to make these games, you're never going to be tom berenger

Distance to target is also an essential bit of info.

If you don't know how far away it is then how can you calculate anything?

Remember this software was probably written by a Geek with a pony tail and leather trench coat. The closest he's came to action would've been his hand. Chances are the full science behind a bullets flights isn't really there. No allowance for dust in the air,, insects in flight etc. Just enjoy the game and chill out.

Change 'leather trench' coat to 'flasher mac' & add a few pounds & that's me....... So why's it so ~~~~ing hard?

Can't chill out when you have to sit through about 40 seconds of babble befor you get one shot & miss.... every ~~~~ing time.
