Don't know if it is a coincidence or if it is actually the same guy but we bumped into a guy from Glasgow, James Toner while we were in Goa and he had been arrested in 2009 and charged with dealing drugs. He has a campaign on facebook, not that, that will do him any good apart from getting a little bit of publicity. James says he was not dealing and had purchases a piece of hash for his own private use. He claims he was set-up bye corrupt police who said they recovered a decent qualtity of hash from him and that he must be dealing. One of the arresting police men has actually been found guilty of corruption etc on other similar cases. James also says he was told when he was first put in jail that if he had ?10.000 the matter would be dropped and he would be free. After spending over a year in in different Indian prisons he was given bail in 2010 but is still awaiting trial and if found guilty will have to spend a very long time in jail.
I certainly would not want to spend any time in an Indian jail for whatever reason. corruption is rife in India and James says it is common for foreigners to be asked to pay large amounts of money rather than face a stint in jail. bye his own account he is guilty of buying a small qualtity of hash for himself but he maintains he was not dealing and was set up bye the arresting police.
It's a shame more Junkies aren't arrested and banged up in Indian jails. I've no sympathy for sad losers that need a bit drugs to enjoy themselves. I'd give them a bullet. Just for their own use you understand
