first off i cant afford it anymore, basic package is ?40 a month. and i'm a little unimpressed with their tinterweb service.find it a little slow.
my dad brought his laptop around yesterday,as i thought the speed was this old machine, but there was no noticable differance.

yes it will be m8, i got 10mb bb xltv and phone with free weekend calls ?40.49 then there ??1.50 paper billing and add that to a few calls usually works out at bout ?46, virgin are getting really pish, i did speed test the other day and was down to 2mb from 10mb, im thinking bout ~~~~ing the tv and phone off because of money issues, would ~~~~ the bb off but its the best going atm, am waiting for bt fibre optics to come in my area, might be worth thinking about skys unlimited bb for ?7.50 a month + be line reantal, sky dont put the brakes on the download speeds like vermin do on there unlimited bb package.

In the star 2 day mick ?16 a month on BT with the smart wireless home hub + the free wifi access to there hotspots + unlimeted uk calls and you get the 0845 +0870 not a bad deal.........................

y don't u tell vermin u want the 20mb line with no extra cost they will giv u it, i was paying ?45 for mtv xl phone and 20mb now i pay ?7more and have 50mb with super hub and i cant knock it m8,just haggle with them

cheers fella's, the BT deal is what im considering. my maine objective is cost reduction. dont need the TV package(ahem),dont need the phone as i have contract minutes and a telephone from a company i worked for 4 years ago,they never disconnected it.
so all i require is tinterweb.

i always felt that vermin turned me over a little anyhow.All 3 for ?20, bow locks, yeah ?20 plus line rental, plus vat etc. coonts. left a bad taste did that.

get on the phone and telll them yer off if you don't get a better deal. i am on basic tv 20meg bb and basic phone for under 30quid a month. i was paying paying 45quid until i phone them up and complained a few months ago.....

as for your speed, check it here.
if it ain't right, get on the phone to them,
there is no reason why vermins speed should drop unless you are being throttled or are being shaped on torrents or newsgroups.

if your just after bb you can get 10meg for ?24 am month or 30meg for ?28.50 per month,
no doubt they'll be looking for a one off payment of 30quid for the "super" hub if you want 30meg

make sure there is nothin running on your machine like utorrent or bit torrent. (as i know you have started using torrents )

seeding back will slow your machine right down,
if youi are seeding back you should restrict your upload speed to a third of your total upload speed availaible.

also vermin will throttle you if you download or upload more than what they call "FAIR USAGE"

have a look at their traffic management policy.

if you are on 10meg and download during the day , you will proberly be getting throttled, best to download only between 9pm and 10am...

SpeedTests generally are nonsense as you only measure the speed of one particular route most of which will be outside VM's control. The only place that VM can (or should) be able to guarantee your speed is within their own network. As soon as you hit the 'greater' internet then your speed is at the mercy of whatever carrier controls the route.

If you really want to test your line speed then you need to set up to download a largeish file from a VM server (vm have a mirror service which carries nice large linux distro's as well as various game updates) and time that update.

Also check BT & Sky's speeds in your area. Look before you leap.

A friend looked at switching away from Virmin to Sly. He soon changed his mind when he found out BT only offered 1.7MB download speeds on the 'upto' 8MB service in his street. Sly was even worse.
